New Pc Problem

Hi i just built my mom a new rig for her birthday. The specs are

Asus a78nx-x Mobo
athlon 3k XP
2x 256Meg 3200 DDR
Radeon 9800 pro
Onboard Sound
D-Link Network Card
Hitachi 80Gig HD

Now i installed XP on it and get it ready to go. It wasnt connecting to the internet, with my router it should just plug n play. Well in the bottom right of my desktop the little notification was coming up every ten seconds that a network cable was unplugged. So i tested the cable on another PC and it worked fine so it wasnt the cable. Tried different drivers for the D-Link card, still same thing. Then i tried the onboard LAN on the motherboard and still the same thing. It connects for about 10 secs then disc's for about 10 seconds and it just repeats. Does anyone know anything else i could try im getting a little clueless on what else to do? Thnx
 
I have a buddy that is experiencing the same phenomenon and we have not been able to figure it out either. Hopefully, someone will be able to shed some light on this issue.
 
tried a different port yet? or a good machine on the same port with the issues
 
Yea i have tried the same port on my dads pc and it worked like a champ. I cannot find out why it is doing this.
 
I'm giving this a bump because I need to know this answer to this question as well.
 
Different NICs do not do the trick for me. I have tried everything from a fresh XP install to switching out everything but the mobo. Everything works initially but after a few seconds usually about 10-20 secs, the system loses the network connection. Is there anything in the router that would cause this? I am about out of ideas.
 
Im still stuck on this problem. When i go to control panel / network connections / view status of this connection then click the Support tab it says

Invalid IP Addresse

ip adress 0.0.0.0
subnet mask 0.0.0.0

Then when i try to repair the connection it fails. Can any hardware network guru help me diagnos this? Ive done all of the methods in the above posts and none have worked for me.
 
What kind of router is it? and have you tried updating the firmware?
 
Its a netgear rp614 i havnt updated the firmware. I will try that next, but i dont think that is the problem. Ive tried it on all ports and its only this pc on any port and the cable is fine to. It just connects for 4-10 seconds then disconects for 4-10 seconds rinse and repeat.
