what else should i check out?

also, what else should i do? (first time builder)

thanks [H]

Two things:

1) Don't worry too much about the space available on the drive. The computer reads the hard drive size differently (1GB = 1024MB) compared to how HD manufacturers label the size (1GB = 1000MB). In addition, depending on what you've already installed on your computer, you're going to lose HD space (a typical Windows installation alone takes up on average two or three gigs, and many games nowadays take up to a gig of space or more).

2) Try burning in your parts to stress the system and test for stability of your parts. SiSoftware's Sandra is what you would need. Burn in your CPU and your RAM overnight and if your computer shows no signs of damage, your computer will be alright.

I dont think you lose 30 gigs on a 160 gig drive... And I am pretty sure he understands that windows takes space up.... I would imagine hes talking about the total capacity that windows is reporting.

yea, i wouldnt expect to lose more than 15gb on a 160gb hard drive. its not really a big deal though, you should have more than enough hard drive room.

BTW that drive *should* be reporting at least 149 gigs.

The problem has to do with some 48 bit addressing thing. You will need to update to service pack 1 for xp, then I think you have to enable some registry setting... The service pack + updates might do it alone.

Nice system, and those temps are really good for a P4C.

The difference in the HDD size is because HDD makers and M$ have different versions of the megabyte. HDD makers say it's 1000 bytes, presumably to inflate their disk sizes. M$ says it's 1024 bytes, which is correct.

The other problem BW speaks of is that WinXP cannot natively support HDDs bigger than 137GB because of limitations in the 24-bit addressing scheme ATA uses. SP1 provides support for 48-bit addressing, which lets you harness the full potential of your hard drive.

I was assuming that you've installed some programs beforehand, but it now seems like you didn't -- my bad. As long as you don't get any "low drive" errors when you install programs, I doubt that you will use up all the drive space anytime soon.

Its still nice to fix up the drive to report the correct size.. Some people here actually use up the space on there drives.

what about other stress test/stability programs i can run over night? which is the best

thanks guys

Sandra's probably the best - and you can configure it to shut off at a certain temp or leave some time in between test runs.

the reason windows says its 131gb is that w/o SP1 it can only read drives as 137gb. Download service pack 1 and you can take advantage of your entire harddrive.

Yes the missing space is SP1 related, my Maxtor 160 was only reporting 130 Gig. If your WinXP does not already have SP1 integrated you need to install SP1 and "partition" and format the missing 30 gigs. I used Partition Magic to do this, once formatted you can use Partition Magic to merge the partitions and have a full 160 Gig drive (well ~152 ish gigs)
