I am in the market for a new pc. I am going to go with a Dell. My question is what is the difference between a Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB and a E8400 (6MB,3.0 GHz, 1333FSB)? Is there a great difference for gaming? Also, how much memory is the norm nowadays for a good pc. my last question is I have a 8800GT video card now because i upgraded last year. If I were to get a better card for gaming what would it be? I am not familair with the newer cards and have only ever used nvidia. I want to get a 22inch monitor or 24. Would my 8800GT be stressed to run at this resolution?

The Q6600 is 4 cores at 2.4 each. The 8800 is two cores at 3.0 each however the 8800 is a newer chip built on a new smaller die size with less (in this case) cache memory.

The 8800 GT can handle a 24" with no problems for everyday use.

You mentioned Gaming. Many of the newer games are and will be written around 4 cores and most of the newer high FPS games demand a better video card unless you are happy with less then stellar performance.

The Q6600 is done, very hard to buy in fact. The 8800 being newer is still selling very well.

If this is to be a dedicated game box I would be inclined to look to the new i7 CPUs and you won't feel like you under bought so quickly.

That brings up the question; have you considered building your own machine?

With a home built system and the right motherboard you will be able to over clock and make exponential changes a factory built box won't allow you to make.

From a hardware point of view both machines are fine for every day use, but you have to be the judge about how much machine you need.;)



 
Home-built computers can save you money, and it's actually a fun learning experience. My first build everything went smoothly, thankfully, and I ended up with a few nicks on my thumb and decent gaming rig. All that and I saved $300 opposed to buying Dell/HP.
