1. What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming, Photoshop (or other intensive programs), Web browsing, strictly HTPC/Playback, etc. (If you have multiple things you want to do with the system, make sure you rank them from most important to least important).Very light gaming. Playback from Amazon/Netflix ect. Web browsing.

2. Will you be overclocking? (If so, are you looking to watercool?)

5. What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need (especially if you will need 3.5" hard drives or expansion cards as these may restrict case options).
I'm reusing an old Maingear Xcube box so I dont need a case. I need Micro ATX board, cpu, ram, video card. I have a sound card and I think I can reuse my power supply. Video card must have HDMI out.

6. If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. For reused parts, list brands, model #s, and, if applicable, firmware revisions.
Reusing the Maingear Xcube box, also my SSD, sound card and dvd drive. I don't know what the power supply is at the moment because Its in a cabinet and I dont want to look right now

7. What specific features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Thunderbolt? Crossfire or SLI support? How many USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s? etc. Which is more important, size of the system or having the particular feature? Make sure you indicate *required* vs. *wanted* for each feature you list.
I really just need something standard. USB 3.0 would be nice

8. What resolution output do you need? 4k playback, 1080p playback, etc for HTPC or give a vertical/horizontal resolution for gaming SFF rigs. Do you need multiple monitor output?
1080P. Will be connected to a Pioneer Plasma

9. Does this system need to fit into a particular space and do you need an optical drive? Think entertainment center shelves, closet space, rackmount, etc. Many modern SFF cases have either removed the optical drive or have been constructed so that removing the ODD increases the configuration possibilities immensely.

10. How comfortable are you with custom case design/modification and electrical wiring? What tools do you have (Screwdrivers/Leatherman, Drill, Dremel, Metal snips, Soldering Iron, Bending Brake, CNC/Welding machines/Plasma cutter, etc...)?

You should buy a new power supply if your existing one is older than 3-4 years because it could be incompatible with the Haswell sleep states and/or may not be able to deliver enough performance.

I've dropped in a GTX 960 for you, but if you only need light gaming, a 950 should also work. If you were not gaming at all, even the CPU iGPU would work.

If you want absolute silence, be sure to check out CPU coolers. For relative quietness in idle/browsing/movies the stock Intel cooler should work.

Just an FYI, here's the 4 NY MicroCenter stores:

Honestly, that vidcard is overkill. If all you're doing is basic web browsing and movie watching, you could get away with using the integrated GPU and save yourself the $170.

For storage, well, considering the fact that the CPU, board, memory and PSU will cost you about $300-350, do yourself a favor and just get a decent SSD in the 250-256GB range (big enough for the OS install, a few apps, plus whatever Windows Updates come along).

A Samsung 850 Evo 250GB will run you about $90.
The slightly better (and longer warrantied 256GB 850 Pro would run about $132.

If you need ACTUAL storage, a 4TB HGST will run you about $170.

So, for around $700, you have a non-high-end build and money left over.
 
Thanks. I'm actually going to reuse my current SSD, DVD drive and sound card.
 
So I went ahead and bought an i7 NUC. 16gigs ram, 500 m.2 drive. Amazing how small it is and how silent. I'm loving it.
