Right now i am about to invest some money into a hardware raid controller for home, i am stuck on either the adaptec 6805 or the areca 1880i (leaning more towards the areca) both are quite similar. Its going to go into a Norco 4220, with a intel S5000PSLROMB motherboard with 24gig of ECC ram and a xeon quad core.

I was going to use either

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822136792

or

http://www.newegg.ca...N82E16822145472

for disks and run the array in Raid 6.

Both drives dont seem to be on the supported list for either card but i believe they should work, can anyone comment on either controller being good or bad or is there a better one? Also can anyone recommend a better drive choice while still being the same price range?

Note this is just for home storage and a esxi box, I am going to run ESXi with direct passthrough to the array disk so i can have a playbox and a storage box all in one.

You just missed out on a 20% off coupon from Newegg that expired yesterday. Picked up my LSI 9260-4i for $255 shipped.

Damn, i got a couple LSI 1068 controllers but they are proving a WH&*@## to flash lol. I might just wait for a sale or look at ZFS again.
