New Motherboard post issues

Picked up a Supermicro X8DTE-F off of ebay for my 2x X5650s that had been previously running in a Supermicro X8DAH+-F.

Hooked up everything up, powered it on, fans spin, I get a BMC heartbeat LED to light up on the board, get LEDs to light up for IPMI and LAN ports. If I mess with the memory or take it out I do get BIOS error beep codes etc. But I get no display, the power LED doesn't light up, I've tried 1 cpu in each slot, different amounts/types of ram. I tried the onboard vid, and a seperate vid card in an x8 slot.

So I only have two things I can possibly think of, but they don't make sense. My PSU either somehow went bad when I moved it to the case, or the motherboard can tell it doesn't have 2x 8 pin proc pwr connectors(I have to use a 2x 4pin to 8pin connector for the 2nd plug, worked fine in my X8DAH). Or my bios is old and it doesn't like my cpu(s), but I can't find a doc that tells me what was fixed in the BIOS revisions.

Any other ideas?
 
hi i have a sr2 and skulltrails and knnow that those 2x boards are real finiky. but i never had a problem powering a board with one real 8 pin 12v connector and a combo, i even ran them with 1 and it seemed fine, wasn't really autosencing the 2nd power plug but thatr's more for current draw thru one connector would be very high when pushed. \ So the ps not being reconized or the second 12v connector to me is just a waste, what kind of ps is it? i have hardly ever seen a ps be a problem. what scares me is you got the board off ebay, have you contacted the seller?

PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750 and yea, the PSU didnt seem like a real issue to me, I'm just trying to think of anything possible.

No, I haven't contacted them yet. I will of course once I make sure its nothing I'm doing wrong. Yea, I wish I didn't have to buy off ebay, but I don't want to pay for a new board.
 
hi, i buy them all the time, but its alway a finger crosser...

so lets break it down.

- tried 1 cpu only in each socket
- also tried the other cpu in each socket

- removed all the ram
- tried only 1 stick in several different slots
- made sure it was different ram sticks so it was not the same stick for each test

- tested with only 1 12v connection
- tested with 2 12 v connections but 2nd was a combo plug

- tried onboad video
- tried discreet video card in different pcie slots

- tried running only video board and 1 ram stick and nothing else but power tied to board

what about hd, what is hooked up, any testing there

just trying to make a quick look decision tree to help someone else jump in and
maybe spot a hole....
 
A couple of those I need to try out still.

I haven't tried it without a CPU, or with only 1 12v connection.

Never had any hds hooked up.
 
this is way out there , but maybe since it's a server board it's stuck looking for a HD...

that is jsut a shot in the dark but who knows
 
Try the video card in a known working computer.Check the bios for graphics assignments.
Pull the power supply leads off the MB, jumper the black and green wires with a paper clip,check all voltages at the PS output connectors.I've never worked on a micro board,but
others as complicated.I made myself a check list of things to check on a no post board. I have a very poor memory,so it's necessary.
 
also reset teh bios is you have that jumper, if you haven't, plus did you chekc the
compadibiluty list for your chips and that mobo, i have seen bios upgrades fix this kind of problem
 
Yea went through everything else listed, etc.

My base issue is that there is a freaking power led on the motherboard itself. It never lights up. You would think after trying multiple PSUs and unplugging everything that LED would light up right?

Last thing I can't try is to update the BIOs, I dont know how the setup should act if the CPU isnt supported(with the current bios). I would still think that LED would come up?

I do have a i7-970 I could try, but I can't even find a list of supported CPUs other than:

Ending up getting the board replaced, same issues, so im sure it doesnt like my extra spicy x5650s. I ordered a cheap L5520 to see if updating the bios will fix anything.

Not sure what to do if that fails me though.
