New Mortal Kombat game coming

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment just announced that the famous fighting franchise will return on the Xbox and PlayStation 3 in 2011 in a new MK that will be in 2D.

The company says that the game will also include extensive online play, a "tag-team" game option that supports up to four players in two-person teams and "the deepest story mode of any fighting game." The game will also support classic 1 vs. 1 combat. The graphics engine is said to be brand-new.

The new movie's definitely an interesting change. Granted it throws the storyline out the window, but it was always a little cheesy anyway.
If the game follows that mold, it could be cool.
If nothing else, Street Fighter 4 showed that a reboot to a classic series can still be good/popular.

bring back the x-rated (i dont mean porn moves lol!) death moves please and buckets of pain!!

I'm pumped for a new MK that bows to the originals 2D variants. Ed Boon also mentioned that this will be M-rated instead of teen. ;) Go Boon go!

That game seriously lost its roots from the last few installments and has been terrible. I haven't touched one since armageddon but if this ends up being decent, I may have to give it a try. I miss Mortal Kombat 1-4

After I saw this article on Kotaku.. oh man I just had the biggest urge to game some MK3. Cyrax & Sektor.. :D

Game was never competitive and gameplay always sucked, are they going to fix that. The only one that didn't blow goat nuts was MK2, and even that blew nuts.

While I'll admit MK's a guilty pleasure, compared to every other major fighting game (SF, Tekken, VF, KoF, or really any other) it really isn't competetive. There are still Mario Kart 64 tournaments being held with people doing pretty insane things...but that doesn't mean that game was a good competition game.
MK tournaments are a novelty at best. It's not to say that they might not be amusing, but at high levels it makes Killer Instinct seem like a competition-worthy game.
Just like NFL Blitz and NBA Jam, Midway makes simplified approachable games rather than something like Madden or Virtua Fighter.

this game just looks awsome, to bad I suck at fighters. The look inside combos are over the top.

based on mk vs dc, I fully expect this game to blow. does anyone even remember the recent mortal kombat vs dc comics? not really, because after some initial hype the game was terrible and never got a balance and bug fix patch it needed. the game had a few neats concepts but it felt incomplete and untested.

sfiv was a great game because it was polished and (mostly) balanced. also nothing in the sfiv made you go 'holy shit, this game if f-ing broke!'

Ok.. Well all you guys saying this isnt competitive have you ever actually seen a tournament...? Or a high level game? Or played any of those top tier players? I mean I'm just asking mk3/umk3 is alot different from mk2/1 I would say those are not competitive... But umk3 has some nutty combos.. and to each meelee move, etc theres a counter.. you see these high level games and they seem simple but its actually alot of parrying trying to get an opening for a combo, a throw, a jab, low kick etc.. I dunno man.. Untill you actually play in or against one of these guys I don't know how you can say its not competitive... I've played against shock etc on live.. I consider myself a above avg player.. but went 30-40 games in a row losing.. I guess if you havent been involved in the scene you wouldnt know.. :(

This game reminds me a lot of MK2 or 3 with better graphics. Hopefully they stripped out all of the animality, babaility and freindship BS and just focused on the fatalities.

You are absolutely correct. I'm sure I'll get flamed, but MKII/MK3 had all the potential to be more complex than it's counterparts b/c it had things that weren't in those games, juggles, mid-air kick(s) combos, and distance of all moves played a crucial roll in the outcome of any top tier match. I agree with all points noted above as well...if you weren't there - you'd never know.

about 15 years ago I used to go after school and play with the old coin operated classic games machines. Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive and other games where very famous. lots of intense challenges and good memories. problem was when I end up spending all my money and start asking friends for cigarettes.

Darn .. i was hoping they'd bring back the "sweat" flying off of the dudes when they got hit ..instead of all that read stuff ...

Personally I've always liked 2d fighters the best. 3d ones are good to but I like the classic style. Street Fighter 4 was great so I'm looking forward to this new MK and the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom 3 :)

Other than the two-dimension gameplay/arenas, the graphics look exactly the same as MK vs DC.

I liked the 3D-gameplay of Deadly Alliance and Deception. The game's slow pace allowed a more methodical, almost tactical approach to defeating your opponent. The pace also allowed the full use of the 3D arenas, where you could use the enivronment hazards to full advantage. Compare it to Tekken, which always felt like a 2D-fighter in a 3D-arena due to the under-emphasis on moving out and in. The different fighting styles you could choose from on the fly, as well as being able to equip a weapon, added extra depth and variety to each fighter.

Armageddon took away the multiple styles, then MK vs DC removed the weapons (as well as most of the blood and the decent fatalities - having an opponent crushed into a bloodless pulp by an arcade machine is only satisfying the first time). Having superheroes in a MK game immediately underminded the violence, as superheroes do not typically kill their enemies, let alone in MK-fashion. Subzero vs Batman in Mortal Kombat sounds great at first, but isn't so great in practice if you want to be true to Batman's character.

I am a little disappointed that the 3D is being ditched, but hopefully this will ensure than the developer focuses on the core gameplay and thus deliver a stronger game than what has been put out in the last six years.

Dear God, this looks even better than the original preview. This is definitely the spiritual successor to MK/MKII/MK3, the movement, colors, etc. Actually, the off screen video reminds me a lot the the pictures inside the EGM #54 with MKII cover many moons ago - My Mortal Kombat love has been in hibernation for nearly 10 years, and now THIS game is showing me that it can live up to the name. ;:D

Game Genie to the rescue.

Wondering who's old school enough to know what the hell I'm talking about...

Anyone have a link for that video? the one posted has been removed.

I've still got a game genie for my super nintendo, a bunch of codebooks still too.
