New modem or router ?

The modem ATT (DSL) provided has one Ethernet port and I want to setup a new computer with Vista. I called ATT, they can send a new modem for $100 or a router for same price. That sounds like a lot of money for an extra ethernet port to be able to add a second computer to there modem.

So my question is do I get a new modem with more ports on it or use current modem and get a router?

Routers look cheaper, will something like this work ?

Thanks

Go to start, run and type cmd.
Then type ipconfig /all

If you get a 192.X, 10.X or 172.X as the first part of your IP Address, you could probably just buy a n-port switch.

Something like these:

If you get anything else for an IP address, you'll need to get a router instead of a switch. Whatever you do though stay away from the BEFSR41. The DIR-615 will do but you'd be better served by spending a little more on a DIR-625/628, DIR-655 or WRT160N.

Get your own router, reconfigure your current modem/router (gateway appliance from the ISP) into bridged mode, and setup your own router to do the PPPoE and obtain the public IP address.

To log into the ISP supplied modem (it's either one of the Siemens Speedstreams, or <the same unit> under the newer Motorola name), there's a yellow sticker on the bottom. It has the web admins IP address, and the password is the serial number on the sticker. Go to PPP locatoin under advanced options, you'll see 3 choices there...one of them mentions you have your computer or your own router to the PPPoE and NAT..select that option.

Go to start, run and type cmd.
Then type ipconfig /all

= ERRO massage on 3 different computers.
