I am buying a new gigabyte motherboard the one I have now has the 845 chipset and the new one has the 865PE chip set.
Can I do this with out reformating my hard drive, and if I can does anyone know how.

You can, but it's not recommended.

Before you do the swap, remove everything in device manager and then shut down. Plan on running a repair install.

I partition my drive into C and D. C is for Windows, D is for everything else. When I need to upgrade, or something happens to my windows and screws it up, I just reformat drive C, and re-install windows. Everything else stays!
