New mobo or new memory?

My server has been down for over a week now :(

It's a K7S5A Pro with 2400 XP stock, 512MB DDR and 780GB of drivespace :D

All it does all day is sit and fold for the most part, but I think the mobo flaked on me again. It has a bad habit of losing bios settings, plus every once in a while it simply stops working with DDR memory and won't POST at all.

It works fine with SDRAM, but I'd rather not downgrade it to SDR. I was thinking about a new motherboard, possibly cheap nforce 2 board (which would also allow for overclocking). Then again, mem would be much cheaper :(

What's the best deal on NF2 boards these days? As far as I can tell, there's not much difference in folding speed on low end boards or high end boards, is there :O
 
I was under the impression that Memory didn't play a huge part in folding. If the board works fine with SDR and all it does is FOLD, downgrading to SDR from DDR should not affect the time it takes to finish a WU. I have 3-4 K7S5A folding with SDR and don't have any trouble.... Folding times are consistent...

Well, my issue is not folding performance with the memory - it's the things I occasionally do with the server. Every once in a while it does run some memory intensive programs, and buying a 512MB stick of SDR seems like it might cost almost as much as a cheap new NFII mobo :O

I think I'm sold on a mobo upgrade instead. Just gotta find the best deal at the moment :>
 
You mean you don't got 20+ sticks of ancient RAM laying about? :eek:

I'd scrounge some SDR first (some 1337 gamer friend perhaps?), then consider upgrading the mobo.

Nah, I sold all my SDRAM a while back. And I need at minimum 512MB in the server.

Looks like I can get a cheapy nforce2 board for ~60 bucks. Although now I'm looking at those boards with gigabit ethernet :D A little heftier cost at 110 or so, but... mmm....

Yeah I'd go for the nForce2 mobo, it's always better to move up to fix something than downgrade to fix it, when you can. As for the gigabit ethernet, unless you have a gigabit network in your house you won't notice it...

This is my anime server / LAN server. It's for LANs where I envision the gigabit ethernet coming in handy.

Now if I can get my server back up soon maybe I'll get back up to 1200-1500ppw
 
Do upgrade the MB :) Then you can clock the thing to, say, 2.2 and get a 10% boost... for the [H]orde :D
