Current pc specs is as follow:

Shuttle sb61g2
P4 2.8 ghz (800mhz fsb) @ stock speed (cpu max overclock was 3.64 ghz on previous rig)
2x512 mb twinmos pc3200 ( 2.5-3-3-8)
Maxtor 120 gb ata
BBA 9800pro @ stock speed

Total new machine:

amd 64 4000 xp
good nforce 4 board
2x512 mb corsair pc4000
Maxtor 250 gb 16mb (or use old hdd)
ATI x850 xt

So the thing is , i could buy a gf 6800 GT NOW (and maybe run the cpu @ 3.64ghz) and use it in my current machine OR i could wait say 3-4 months (price drop on cpu and release of the x850 xt) and upgrade/totally replace my machine.

Would there be a big enough speed difference between either? (Especially to back up the cost.)

probably not enough to back up the cost. you could go for an Ultra or the 6900 if it comes out or whatever follows the 6800s

The new build would give you about a 20% overall performance boost. Is that worth the cost to build new for you right now ?

My rule of thumb is to build all new when a clear 40% or higher overall system comes around. That may be a year or so away IMHO. I would opt for the video card upgrade now. Just make sure you would be happy with it in a newer system sometime down the road.
My 9800 PRO still runs EVERYTHING at descent framerates....yours should also for now.

Well yeah decent is offcourse a matter of personal opinion.(But yes,the 9800 pro is still a quite good card atm considering its age.). I really dont like slowdown in my games and quite frankly on some games (like tribes : vengeance, warhammer 40k: dow) i get serious slowdown when theres heavy fighting. (Thats with aa and af disabled @ 1280 x 1024)

Reason is also for Star wars: Rep. commando and Battlefield 2 due out next year. So perhaps id better wait till those games are out, see how my card holds out and maybe then i could get a nice 6800 GT. (Which by then prices on those should have dropped a bit.)

Just wait and blow your whole wad at the same time. Prices will go down slightly by then so it's win/win.
