New MacBook Pro Fan Buzz

Hi all,

I've been doing a fair bit of gaming this past week on my MacBook Pro (in XP) so the fans have also been running a fair bit. I have noticed (for the first time today - in over a year) a buzz coming from the right hand fan.

I'd describe the buzz as being like a piece of film was clipping one of the fan blades. There's a distinct rhythm to the buzz and the RPM of the fan thus affects the frequency of the buzz.

I first tried tilting (and even shaking) my laptop to try and reduce it (thinking it may dislodge what was causing the noise) - no real difference.

By now it was really bugging me so I took my MB Pro apart and took a look at the fan - which was unobstructed (and surprisingly clean actually).

I've just put it back together and it's still there. I tried 'reving' the fan using iCyclone but that hasn't helped at all.

Does anyone know a cure for fans that decide they want to buzz?

The fan might have a faulty bearing. If your MBP is still under warranty, you should send it/take it in for service.
 
Yeah, when mine started doing that, I sent it in for warranty repair. The receipt said they replaced the "FAN ASSY" which gave us a bit of a chuckle but fixed the problem.
 
Yeah, thought it might be something like that.

Thing is my laptop's 2 months out of warranty (!!! :mad: ) and I don't really want Apple going through my system (I'm 'evaluating' certain Apple software).

Any idea if I can order the parts from them and fit it myself or whether Apple has a turn a blind eye policy?

Apple usually doesn't go through your system. If they have any need to use it for anything, they either boot it from a Firewire drive or re-image it.

You can order parts for DIY repairs, but I'm not exactly sure how it works as I've never had to do it.
