New M-Itx File Server Build

I am planning on within the next month building an M-Itx File Server. Here is what I have specced out already:

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=13713432

I will be installing ESXi on it and if I can, Windows XP.

The system will be mostly used as a NAS, although I might do a small amount of light gaming such as warcraft 3, starcraft 2. If I can get a cheaper system with mATX then I would be open to that. I will be installing the OS on a flash drive most likely, possibly a laptop drive. I would like the case to have 4 3.5" bays for future expansion. I also want the cpu to be 64-bit. I think the one above is but I am not sure.

Thanks for your help,
Trevor

Are you sure ESXi is compatible with that chipset? that nic? no need for virtualization there imho. If you want to try and learn ESXi you can install it inside VMware workstation anyway :D

I have played with esxi plenty in vmware workstation and I will be using it if I want to install any other os's to play around with. No, I am not sure if ESXi is compatible. I wanted to get a build down before I decided to see if it is compatible with ESXi. If its not then i can live without ESXi.

for the case if possible wait for the lian li pc-q08. It is going to have 6 3.5 drive bays and its made for mitx boards.

why should you wait for it.. you can order it from newegg today..

Kinda spendy though, but tbh I am tempted to order it for my server. Right now I have a ITX board in an antec 300. Stuck with the antec cause I could hold the 6 hard drives. Well can do that in the q08 so..

Ha! that mITX board must be dwarfed by the sheer size of the antec case.

I see why you'll use the USB drive for booting, there are only 4 SATA slots available.

Yea.. & if I cant find someone that wants it soon I will be selling that Antec & moving my server into a Full Tower Rocketfish (Lian Li) simply because I like the aluminum case. But I will have to order 24" sata cables before I can do that.

Also if you have the room for a card you can get a 8 port SATA PCI card. The motherboard in my server actually only has 2 sata & I use them for my boot drive & the CD Rom.

If you would like another SATA port, the ZOTAC G43ITX-A-E or G45ITX-B-E both have 5 SATA ports. Also for a small server case, the Chenbro ES34069 is an awesome case if you have the money. It is expensive, but it holds 5 hard drives (4 3.5" external hot-swap, 1 2.5" internal) and is incredibly small. I have that case and I have the OS on a laptop drive and use the 4 3.5" bays for storage. It can also be found for cheaper at sites other than Newegg.

And to clarify, that Celeron is 64-bit.

Given the size difference & the PSU i would pass on that chenboro & go with the Lian Li PC-q08. Its a bit bigger & not server orientated, but it holds another hard drive & you then have the room to throw in a pcie sata controller. Given the cost difference if you think your going to go that route it would be cheaper to get eh q08 with a 400w corsair PSU & the SATA controller then it would be to get that chenboro case. Thats not even including the cheaper motherboard that you already have spec'd.
Also I am not sure what your requirements are as far as CPU speed goes, but I am a fan of the Dual Core atoms for home use servers. I am Currently running an intel atom D510 board with a cheapo sil3124 controller with 4gb corsair ram. It runs whs without a problem & MS has already said that the new upcoming WHS version will be fully supported with the atoms.
