New lens - noob, please help?

I'm considering getting the Tamron 28-80mm Lens kit listed here. I have had little time to research some lens for the Rebel XT and I know that the forum knows a good deal, what are your opinions?

why are you getting that instead of the kit lens? You need to get something that starts around 18mm for a slightly wide angled lens. The kit lens is decent for the money.
 
That lens I am 'assuming' is only marginally better. And when you buy the kit lens with the camera, in your case the XT it's pretty cheap. No reason to spend more money to shift the mm to the tele end and lose the wide angle, and they are probly pretty similiar performance wise.
