New laptop, need advice.

Hello hello,

I need to get the wife a new laptop.
So... I'm looking at laptops like this.

I do not know alot about laptops but I did make some choices.
I think you can see choices there, higher resolution, 7200 Rpm HD (at least), 8 gig ram.
I could use some recommendations here, . She dont need the best of the best. But I want to get her a nice, fast, quick, reliable, + resolution lap.
Anywhere around the $1,000.00 area is ok I guess. (its her xmas present)

Do you need a reasonable graphics card? What size screen are you looking at? What kind of storage is necessary?

Basically what is it used for.
 
She uses it for light weight gaming, some art / video / picture programs (not sure what).
Rosetta stone, and alot of college school work (shes a teacher).
would like at least a 15.6 screen higher res.
750 Gig is ok.

What do you consider light gaming? In terms of the GPU requirement.

You're better off looking at a SSD, or SSD cache drive solution versus specifically looking for a 7200rpm drive. I think that somewhat limits your choices greatly if you want it out of the box. Drive upgrades are typically rather easy DIY jobs as well.

Possibly look into the Asus n550jv.

1920x1080 15.6inch IPS matte. good even for an IPS screen.
GT 750m DDR3 (not sure what you consider light gaming)
i7-4500hq
good thermal/noise
relatively light/compact for the form factor

The weakness is I don't believe there is any ability to add a SSD without either replacing the existing drive or replacing the DVD drive with a 2.5mm dock.
 
The MSI G Series GE60 2OC-097US is a great laptop for the money. If you want the most horsepower for the dollar you will likely want to check out the MSI laptops and some of the Sager/Clevo models. the GE60 is a great option in your price range if not the best.
