I recently purchased a brand new hitachi 30gb 5400rpm HD for ny laptop. I installed it along with a new 256mb ram stick and it makes a clicking noise whenever doing something. When idle, it is fine. I read the sticky on "clicking" hard drives and it was mainly due to a failing HD, but mine is brand new. Any thoughts? Also, my touch mouse on my laptop causes a slight whine whenever its being used. Any info is much appreciated.

It can vary from drive to drive even from the same batch, but what your probably hearing is the head(s) doing their thing. As they seek and write data they (can) make noise. It can be worse in a laptop since the drive isnt as isolated as it might be in a full case.
Not sure about Hitachi, but Maxtor has a quiet feature that can be disabled or enabled again. Check your products web site to see if they have a similar utility, but it will slow access times a bit if they do.
