New Laptop cannot get wireless to work

My step son got a new laptop. I have been unable to get it to sign on to the wireless.
Is there a trick to it. We input the password but it will not connect. Is it possible it is not compatible with the Verizon FIOS router we have.

The laptop is windows 8.

We have three windows 7 laptops that all work wireless.

Step son got a belkin router from his gramma. connected it to a lan port on FIOS router and BAM he has a wireless connection and internet work on his Windows 8 laptop now.

must have been something with wireless on the actiontec router.
