I picked up a 2.4ghz dell 5100 this week. After cleaning it up and getting xp running it is now folding for us :) Now I'm looking to upgrade it of course! It's only got 256meg of ram and my friend has a dead 5150 that has 512 in it. That 5150 also has a higher res screen and a internal wireless card in it that I could yoink for cheap. So I'm about 95% sure the ram will be fine in the 5100 as will the wireless card, anyone think that I can get that higher res screen to attach to the 5100? I know that if the demensions are the same I've got a good chance, any of you guys ever done anything like this? I would ask this in the mobile computing forum but they seem unexcited about it and haven't done anything with my previous question, as in zero replies. Thanks guys!

Screen swapping can be touchy. You gotta remember the inverter output. If you have to change screen and inverter is the rail powering the inverter going to give enough juice to fire the screen. Best thing to do is google the serials and see if you can find a compatibility list. Alot of the times yes it will work, someone has done it, and can give you nice instructions on how. :)

 
Well I wasn't sure at first but after looking at dells website it has both the 5100 and 5150 service notes in the same documents (meaning they are the same). So yes you can take the screen, ram and wireless card and swap it into yours. Here is the page where it gives you a step by step procedure on how to swap the screen. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/sm/display.htm#1084976

Also before you swap make sure that you really want the higher resolution, I'm not sure which screen he has but the highest availible for that model is 1600x1200.

Overall the screen swap isn't that hard, the part that takes the most time is the bezel around the LCD, it can be a pain at times.

Geek thats a great find there, thanks a ton. I've used the 1600x1200 screens before and I llike them. If the bezels are the same demensions then I won't need to disassmble the cover off the screens I'll just swap the lids off each one to make it easier on me. I figured this wouldn't be a big deal for swapping cause the only differences between the lappys are the cpus running at 533fsb instead of 400 on the 5100 and the fact that the 5150 requires more power to do that. Cosmetically they're really close to identical on the outside from what i've seen.
 
you're welcome, it is atually amazing the documentation you can find on the dell laptops and how they show you exactly how to take almost the whole thing apart yourself. I've had to reference pages like that a few times myself for things i wasn't sure of. A website that you might want to visit is http://www.notebookforums.com if you ever have any problems there are lots of people there that are much more knowledgeable than I on this stuff.
