New Keyboard & Mouse - what would you get???

I'm not up to speed on the choices of keyboards and mice at all so, I could use some suggestions. I'm still using a decade old white Logitech from the late 90's - because it works fine, but, I want something that's good for gaming too. It might be nice to have a new USB keyboard but, are they really better? What are the pros & cons of a USB keyboard?

Mouse: I have the Logitech M310 wireless right now and it's just fine except for gaming. It's too small for me perhaps - my hand and fingers go numb after about 30 to 45 minutes but, I constantly have to 'shake it off'. I'm sure many other gamers suffer the same thing - so, what's the cure? Does a larger mouse take care of that problem or no? Or maybe an XBox 360 controller for the PC is better since they're suppose to be ergonomic?

What's the best keyboard & mouse to get for PC gaming for the best price? It would be sweet to have:

* performance
* head-set jack
* audio control
* back lite

What other options should I consider that make online computer gaming a more enjoyable experience? Will they be coming out with new keyboard & mice with USB 3.0 - even if it probably makes no significant difference?

Here are some options but, since I have no experience with any of them I have no way of knowing which are good and which to stay away from:

Keyboard and mouse? Thats way old school. Get with the times man, the keyboard and mouse will soon not be needed.

If you're worried about ergonomics while at the computer I'd suggest going for a 10-keyless keyboard or smaller for gaming. That would allow you to use both with less strain from spreading your arms and using a more natural posture.

PS/2 v USB is a big pile of BS if you ask me. The only way it would really make a difference is if you can type faster than The Flash (if he knew how to touch type, lol), even then the only time it would matter would be for extended typing periods...

I see, so, is it fair to say that keyboards and mice haven't really had much of a performance increase even with USB and probably won't any time soon? Perhaps, I should just stick with what I've already got and save the $$$?

So, no need to run out to buy the $250 Razer DeathStalker Ultimate keyboard then?

Razer Keyboards

I was only interested in getting a new keyboard and mouse or controller if it was really a performance improvement with some sweet features over what I've already got. I can't believe I may end up stuck with this ancient keyboard yet again. :(

I replaced my Logitech G15 with a Vortex Race tenkeyless mechanical (red cherry switches & white LED backlight). The keys feel great and it freed up an incredible amount of desk space, and my hands can be much closer together, which feels better. And I picked up a Griffin Powermate for volume control.

A mouse upgrade might be in order since wireless tech. has improved a bit, I'm partal wo hard-wired myself, lol. Moving onto laser from optical could also be a potential upgrade, just make sure what you pick up has a decent laser with firmware that's solid.

I'm not sure what kind of keyboard you're using right now, but I'd stray away from Razer and iOne manufactured keyboards in general; good hardware, not so great manufacturing. So expect to gamble since you may need to go through a few RMA to get one that'll hold up, if you go that route.

So, steer away from Razer and iOne manufactured keyboards in general - what are good brands/manufacturers? Is Logitech okay?

Currently, what I have is:

Logitech M310 (wireless mouse) optical

Logitech SK-2500 (standard PS/2) wired
http://www.recycledgoods.com/products/Logitech-SK-2500-Internet-Keyboard-867012-0100.html

I've enjoyed the wireless mouse since the wire sometimes causes problems snagging while gaming & gets me killed but, the keyboard is wired & that's fine by me.

I haven't gotten into mice as much as keyboards, yet... lol, but I have heard good things about the Logitech G700. May be someone else has a better suggestion here.

I couldn't really say what's better or not as far as membrane keyboards (standard run-of-the-mill since they're cheap to produce) goes, but I sure as hell wouldn't pay more than ~$30 (and that's pushing it, lol) for one unless it was a Topre. I'm not saying they're bad, some of them are actually quite good; I'm just saying that you pay for gimmicks when you start paying more than that for a membrane keyboard. Basically any cheap board will be the same as it's "high-end" counterpart unless you want to go mechanical.

I have a Zowie AM, it's relatively cheap and performs very well. It replaced my SteelSeries Sensei actually.

Razer gears always break for me. SS is more reputable when it comes to durability I suppose. But then again the senor in my Sensei did die. I got my replacement mouse today, and I can say their customer service has been topnotch. Even upgraded me to the MLG edition for free. Too bad I'll be selling it as I don't need another mouse.

For the keyboard, I would highly suggest you get a mechanical one, and non-Razer at that too. I'm using the QuickFire Pro but it's made by iOne and they don't have the most stellar rep (they also make the Razer BW btw).

Any mech keyboard will outperform a gaming keyboard, but they will lack the added features such as media keys, windows key disabling etc. So do consider if you need those.

There are actually quite a few mech.s that include these features now. One of the cheapest is probably the CMStorm Trigger which has backlighting, media/macro keys, windows key disabling and a few USB ports.

You just gotta dig around 'till you find something you like :D

Ya I know I myself am using one right now :D

What I meant was, higher quality mech KBs such as Filco, Ducky etc don't usually come with these keys. Only the ones made for gaming purposes do.

Corsair K69/K90 seem unreliable. Aside from being partially mech. (which should reduce the cost considerably) many users run into key repeating problems unrelated to the physical keys. There are so many posts about it that I'm really surprised that Corsair doesn't recall them considering how they stand by their other products with pride and understandably so (the issue has gone unresolved for several months iirc).

Ducky's quality line (90** boards) actually do have media keys as well as DIP switches for enabling/disabling left Windows, swapping left Ctrl <> Caps and Alt <> Windows, they also have backlighting options.

Razer reminds me of Monster cables... great marketing, but questionable products. I do like the ergonomics of the Deathadder, but as another poster mentioned, they all break quickly. Logitech isn't much better these days, they too break pretty fast, but I also like the ergo of the G500 - G700

As for keyboards, I would just get a solid mechanical keyboard (I'm partial to Filco), and if you need macros you can always use AutoHotKey or pick up an X-Keys board. In fact an X-keys board and Autohotkey combo is just ridiculously more elegant and powerful than any gaming keyboard at any price.

I currently use the g9x and the cm storm pro. I also have a g700 that I'm using more now because of the size and wireless capability. As far as keyboards, keep in mind that on the Cooler Master series, the media keys are not dedicated per-say. You must lock the FN key and forgo the use of the F1-12 keys. It won't be an issue for a lot of people, but I found it slightly irritating.

Sorry if I missed it, but what's your budget?

I'm currently rocking a Filco Ninja TKL, white, with black switches, and a WYSE blue on beige double shot set with moogle kit. Couldn't love it any more.

As for mouse, I'm using a Steelseries Ikari Laser in white with trackpadz feet.

Awesome combo IMO.

Cheapest mechanical keyboard you can find + Logitech G500. Your previous Log mouse has held up for 10 years, that's gotta warrant some loyalty.

Rosewill is selling out the rest of their 9000 non backlit mechanical keyboards for around $65-$70. What is the budget?
