new iRAM drive

Still only 4 sticks :( And at $245/stick, an 8 GB device will cost $980, even before you buy the device. But at least it's better than DDR - that's $291/stick, or $1164 for four.

If it's like the iRAM 1 was, you should be able to.

I wonder if there's some limitation preventing them from using 8 slots? More expensive chip required, etc? At any rate, I was considering purchasing an iRAM 1. If monies are availible, I may opt for this new one instead. It's nice to finally see some pictures of it. I like the drive faceplate.

Not even enough space to install vista... meaning you'd need two of these on raid0... there goes $2,000 just to be able to install your os.

There's gotta be $2k of ram any way you look at it. 2GB sticks cost $245 each, you need 8 sticks to get 8 sticks worth ;) Thus, it's at least 2k for the space. Probably add $150-200 each for the drives. And hope they support SMART this time.

 
Well, personally I want 8 or more slots - 12 would be better than 8 - 24 slots for a 5.25 form version.
3.5" form factor so I can fit it into a spare harddrive bay or adapt it to a spare 5.25" bay.
A 5V standby power connector option - pci slot adapter board to tap into the power, internal USB connector, or 3" ATX motherboard extension with power tap.
Molex and SATA power connectors for main power supply.
SATA2 interface.


And the ability to use ANY kind or size of 184 pin memory. ECC, registered, or not. And use different sizes. Don't require populating it with the same size sticks.
Make a DDR and a DDR2 version.

And a retail price of $75.00 or less - unpopulated.
And 1GB no-name PC2100 sticks drop to less than $10.00 each.

Then I'll think about getting one for either page file, swap file, or OS drive use.

Till then - It will be way to expensive for me.

 
How do you plan to fit 24 sticks of memory into a 5.25" bay? I don't think they'd physically fit.

USB devices (at least on my machine...) are off while the machine is off.

And $75? You're gonna be waiting a long, long time.

 
Going from 4 to 8 DIMM sockets would require a second entire iRAM basically, or a significantly different chip with a much, much higher pincount. End result? Cost more than doubles. So, no, 8 DIMM sockets aren't going to happen anytime too soon. The theory behind the iRAM is relatively simple, and Gigabyte was smart enough to keep the implementation simple as well. But, I really don't see a lot of people buying these for anything other than bragging rights.

And yes, I can fit 8 DIMMs into a 5.25" half-height within the same space as a CD-ROM. However, it would require a 6 layer PCB and some real trickery with the layout, as the control components would likely have to be mounted on the underside.

Basically the cheapest way to get 8gb would be buy 8 1gb sticks and raid two of the devices together (with the benefit of being even faster)

$515 for 8x 1GB
$400 for 2x iRam2

Little under a grand how I see it. Although if they become popular I am sure the devices will end up being considerably less in mass production.

No, the iRAM (2?) isn't perfect, but considering that there is barely any competition nor a big market, I don't see why Abit (err... abit) would spend a lot of money on R&D...

I'm not sure RAIDing the i-RAM does that...seek time is already close to zero on a single card, why would two be any faster?

Apart from RAID-1, most RAID levels are not designed to reduce seek time, but rather increase STR.
 
Might as well go 15k SCSI or wait for solid state IMO. Both will probably be cheaper and have higher capacity.

Thats over $1,000 for 8 gigs of storage and two units based on your calculations.... and thats still not enough to run windows vista install.

Increase the length of the drive - like the old, old cdrom drives. I've got one of them that's at least 10" long.
On my DFI Expert SLI DR, 4 sticks take up an area about 5" X 2" , maybe smaller( I've got Fragtek's Plexiglass 50mm fan mount over my RAM - and the 50mm fans over lap the entire area. 50mm is just barely under 2"). And that has a 1/2" gap in the middle of the stick pairs.
5.25 bay height is 1.5" - that's why it's called "half-height" orginal 5.25 bays were 3" tall.
Stand the sticks upright, and stack them like cord wood. Minimium gap between them. They won't be running at PC2100 speeds so we can reduce the voltage and cooling requirements. So, based on the spacing on my DFI, add an extra slot in the gap between the pairs. 5 sticks will fit in a 2" width. Make the drive over 10" long (~20 sticks)
Or we can make it take 2 5.25 drive bays and reduce the length a little so that we can stack 2 boards in the enclosure. ~8" long and full 3" height we'd get 32 sticks or more.
Push the ends of the sticks to one side of the drive. The extra required caps and chips and such can be mounted along the other side and bottom of the board.

It's possible, and 6 layer boards are old technology and getting pretty cheap to make, especially in volume. Current LCD watches use 6 layer boards.
The control chip doesn't have to be as complex as the one for a motherboard does and neither does the power circuitry. Not looking for PC2100 speeds here. Could get by with less than PC66.
In fact - if you could get PC66 RAM in 1 GB sticks (or bigger!!!) - they would be perfect for this application.

Well, that's enough dreaming.
Maybe somebody from Micron, Corsair, Samsung, and Asus are lurking on this board.

Misunderstanding here; it's not the complexity that's the problem. It's the pincount and physical size. Even using 15deg sockets as they are, physically there's no way they could fit 8 DIMMs. They'd be looking at two controllers at around 1.5" to a side presuming BGA, at least 360 pins per, and double the capacitors and other support circuitry. Which, if you'll notice, eats a lot of the current board.
The complexity comes in when you try to reduce the amount of space everything takes by packing it closer together. Signal noise, interference, heat, etcetera. In an enclosed assembly like Gigabyte's showing, that means they'd have to add active cooling, which would turn a lot of folks off.

In fact - if you could get PC66 RAM in 1 GB sticks (or bigger!!!) - they would be perfect for this application.

Not going to happen. Anything like this, in order to succeed, has to use commonly available memory. Right now, that means DDR or DDR2. Even PC133 is incredibly hard to come by. Also, to get 150MB/s out of say, PC100, you'd have to basically do two channels and alternate read/write cycles per channel. That increases controller complexity dramatically, and even then won't garauntee >100MB/s, just because you may have landed all the bytes you want on the first channel.

I wasn't thinking about a Vista install, but now that you mention it whats the minimum install requirements?
 
15GB of free space. That includes quite a bit of swap and other stuff, though - I hear a full install is 8.2 GB not including that junk.

and who knows, maybe the nLite fellows will help the average joe out by offering a new version that will strip the crap from vista.

Hmm well you wouldn't need to put the swap on the iRAM though... Mine rarely gets used anyway...
 
So is there any word on weather or not these things willl support ecc/non-registered or even ecc/registered ddr2 modules?
