I am looking to buy a new ipod (prolly a 20GB), and was wondering should I spend the extra and go for the new ones (5th gen I assume) or save some money and get the 4th generation 20GB. How are the new ones? Any suggestions?

well im going to assume you are talking about the 5th gen being the photo model... if you can get a 4th gen for under 299 (which is totally do-able) go for it. All the color screen gives you is the ability to view pictures that you put on it... everything else is the same. I have a 3rd gen and my mom has a 4th and you cant tell a diff in sound quality.... go with the b/w screen one enless you really want to shell out the bux for the color screen so you can view pics... also when you get one get an iskin... they are the best cases on the market

I suggest the 4th generation if the 5th is the photo ipod. I really dont see the reason for paying extra money for the photo feature, as a computer screen is better suited for showing images compared to the small ipod screen.

Officially, iPod photos and iPods with colour displays are still 4th-generation, and that's understandable. About all that changed was the display type and the photo functionality. While significant, they didn't exactly represent an overhaul of the design.

When the 5th-generation iPod hits, you'll know - there will be a noticeable visual change in the iPod itself, not just in what appears on the screen.

IMO, you should just get the non-color ones if they are 50< bucks cheaper than the photo ones. I have a feeling that apple will make the next generation have video capabilities, so unless you're rich or you just don't mind, the photo is just waste of money. Of course, it would be nice to have color, but it's really your preference.

i dont think photo ipods are called "photo ipods" anymore, they are boxed as normal ipods but with color screens and a picture capability, hence the 5th generation

Apple has already stated that the 20/60 GB iPod Photos are 4 1/2 gen, not 5th. Find a college student (unless you are one) and just buy a 20GB Color with the student discount. I bought one a few weeks ago and I love it!!!

Consider this... Apple refreshes their iPods quite often. The 5th generation will most likely hit before or on holiday season. There is evidence which seems to make the wait worthwile:

*Toshiba makes 1.8inch 80gig dual-platter drives and 20% thinner single-platter 40gig drives
*iTunes store has a mysterious upsurge in video availability... + compatibility.
*+ word on the street is they're organizing the selling of music videos online.
*color screens are now the standard...

all things point to video-capable iPods. And if all goes well, this means 5th gen.

The design is also rumored to be much more of a drastic change. I believe a few sites mentioned word of an iPod Mini-style aluminum casing for the regular iPods. I think that's kind of cool.

As much as these current iPods kick ass, I would wait if I were you.

And pricing isn't a very dramamtic difference. I would go with the color one if I were you, because any significant and usefull firmware updates will now go to the color ipods, and not the B-W ipods. The color versions already have a CPU capable of hardware vid decoding, so you never know... if they do instigate vids in iTunes, they may release an iPod Photo firmware that will allow them to be viewed.

Hope that gave some food for thought.

Im with ya in thinking the next ipod will be vid capable. But i do not think that they will release a firmware to allow the color screen ipods to view video. In the past apple has put out firmware updates only to allow better compatiblity with itunes music store, with the exception of one update that added the shuffle songs capability to 2nd and 3rd gen ipods (and this happened 9 months after the 4th gen came out). I am not getting rid of my 3rd gen ipod untill i can get a new one that i can watch office space on!

Id get the new ones with the color screen. I cant look at normal ipods the same now that I have a photo ipod. My mini sucks compared to my U2 photo ipod.

the newer color ipods also have better battery life--worth the extra few $$$
