I'm not finding much in the rumor mill about new iPhones, so I thought I'd check here with my fellow [H]ard members.

My AT&T contract is up in a few months and I'm waiting to get my iPhone, but if they are releasing a new version soon, I'm willing to wait to get the newer model if possible...

The usual iPhone update comes in summer, unlikely before that.

really summers? Has it been 3 years since the original hmmmm...

No, not 3 years, not even 2 yet. The original came out in the summer of 2007, 3G just 9 months ago in the summer of 2008, now we're looking at <insert whatever name Apple will give the new one> in what, 4-5 months tops... so, we're at the 19-20 month point since the original was released in stores.

If its yearly, then the third should arrive two years after the first.

I wouldn't be surprised if its just a revision this year with more storage and tweaks.

yeah, that alone could get me to hold off a couple of months.... only thing is i don't want to have to wait in line at the mac store like all those dorks did last summer and the summer before that....

Their will be new models probably in June. Rumors floating around are a 16 & 32gb model with higher resolution screen and a basic 8 gb model with the current screen or a lower res screen that will be at the $99 price point. The 16 & 32 will be at the $199 and $299 price points for a 2yr contract. Also look for a faster processor. Hopefully the new phones will support multiple programs to be running at the same time.

Apple will have to do a heavy hardware upgrade to get people to buy again, this year.
~Better processor
~Video added to camera
~Multitasking apps (non-Apple)
~Bigger hard drive
~MMS
~Copy/paste
~Better battery life

No, just changing the name should do it. :p

Seriously though, I bet it would work for them.

Not really. The lack of these "features" hasn't impeded iPhone sales, and I doubt they would seriously impede sales going forward through new hardware revisions. Stuff like copy and paste, as well as multitasking, don't need hardware updates to implement. That's a simple firmware update away, but it depends on if Apple can get it working well enough. I suspect we'll see some of those features added to the iPhone if the performance improvements in Snow Leopard can translate to gains on the iPhone.

Don't hold your breath on MMS, though. Apple is purposefully pushing e-mail as a superior alternative to MMS. To an extent, they're correct to do so: MMS was created for an era when phones didn't have the high-speed internet access or full keyboard layouts they currently sport.

Very true, I was just listing off the major points I hear from iPhone owners around me. I have given up on the iPhone currently (Touch Pro on AT&T). While some of my thoughts are purely firmware, it is just like Apple to launch software upgrades with a new phone to sell it. Yet in the background they will say, works on older phones, they want you to upgrade to these new features with a new phone.

I'm with the many in order for me to upgrade from my first gen 4gig iPhone Apple will need to something new and wow in order for me to sign a new contract. Otherwise the iPhone 3G does nothing for me.

all of these wanted features can be solved with a simple software update but apple will of course be stubborn and probably not listen to the consumer.

even without all those features mentioned above, the iphone just seems to be way better than any other smart phone i have played around with (storm, g1, winmo phones)

What, no one's mentioned the new model is coming to Verizon yet? Hahaha, I wish. I hate those rumors that pop up every year (b/c I'm on verizon! :p).

They will probably make them faster (newer chips are cheaper) and possible add a camera to the ipod touch, other than that I wouldnt expect much.

Ironically, Apple first pitched the iPhone to Verizon, who rejected it because they couldn't slap their logo all over it and charge for extra features.

once the ihpone is released from the phone carrier at n t, is it just gonna be out there for all other companies, or is it more likely that a company or two are gonna heavily contract it?

What'll likely happen is a carrier will step up and offer an exclusive deal. Depending on the money, Apple might prefer to re-up with AT&T and save money on having to re-engineer the phone for two different technologies.

Verizon probably won't bid for the iPhone's rights, they seem content with pushing the Blackberry Storm.

I know.... Verizon is ridiculous when it comes to that. They put their own crappy OS on almost all their phones.

Unfortunately, Verizon has way better coverage than AT&T in the places I frequently visit.

Totally true, but I have heard some horror stories about the storm.

verizon puts more money into their marketing budget than anything else...

all those horrible commercials are enough for me not to go with them.

Yea, if it wasn't for vzw's coverage been so damn good everywhere I go I'd drop them tomorrow. Sadly their customer service sucks, as do their phones (for the most part) but everyone else cant carry my calls to save their life . Until they wise up to running better tech I'll have to keep hoping they get AND dont screw up the Omnia HD.

I just hate the fact that if you drop the phone at all (in which I dropped mine through my seat in my car) the stupid vibrate button stops working.

I've dropped my iPhone plenty of times and vibrate works just fine.

I had read online that a new iPhone should be out later this year that will have the graphics of a PSP.

Apple still needs another US carrier.

If there are 10 million iPhones out of 77 million AT&T customers... don't you think they could sell at least that many iPhones to 83 million Verizon customers?

Apple won't sell 10 million more iPhones on AT&T. People have left Verizon for AT&T... but I think pretty much everyone who wanted an iPhone already has one. And Apple wants more iPhones in people's hands.

As contracts end, I think anyone who was waiting for the iPhone 3G will start migrating over. For the first year or so, the iPhone was still on EDGE so some people may have renenwed a two year contract with Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile just to keep 3G speeds. Granted, this won't add up to another 10 million, but Apple has a huge base of people who like their iPhone and will come back every 2 years (or less, depending on your need to have the newest gear) to buy another.

It already has the graphical capability of a PSP: heck, possibly better. Look at Metal Gear Solid Touch, compare that to MGS Portable Ops.

The trouble with your logic is that you presume Verizon wants the iPhone. Again: they turned the iPhone down. They want nothing to do with it because their business plan is based on charging users to unlock phone features, not to mention the co-branding. Apple wants the iPhone available at flat rates and doesn't want to co-brand the thing. Thus, Verizon told Jobs to get the hell out.

If Apple decides they want to expand to multiple carriers after the AT&T exclusivity deal expires next year, they'll probably look at T-Mobile, as AT&T and T-Mobile use the same technology. If Apple is willing to engineer a CDMA version, then Sprint would be a likely target.

But you can forget about using the iPhone on Verizon's network.

That all said, you have a good point about diminishing returns from AT&T customers. I bought the iPhone 3G last summer, and I don't see myself getting a new version, presuming one is on the way. It would have to have some amazing features for me to bother: significantly longer battery life, A2DP, that sort of thing.

Yeah. Verizon turned the iPhone down... 4 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

Apple insisted on sharing revenue with the carrier. They don't even do that anymore.

I guess Verizon would try to lock down the GPS and force people to pay for VZNavigator... but the iPhone is already lacking key features. There's not much else Verizon could cripple.

Cingular inked the deal with Apple 4 years ago, when the iPhone was nothing more than a sketch and an idea. After seeing the success of the iPhone... don't ya think Verizon would do anything to get the iPhone now?

T-Mobile would be logical because of the hardware. However, other cell phone manufacturers have models on both GSM and CDMA networks... Apple's engineers could certainly do the same. T-Mobile is the smallest of the nationwide carriers... but they'd probably pick up a few million iPhone subscribers. But, after all the money is spent on a T-Mobile marketing campaign... "iPhone, now on T-Mobile!" Would it be worth it?

If Apple's goal is total cell phone domination... they need a large carrier like Verizon. Let's hope Verizon can agree this time. :)

I'm not holding my breath... but with 4G/LTE coming in a couple years... and Verizon having it first... it might be a great time for Apple to launch iPhoneVZW 4G. I just got a Verizon Blackberry Curve... but when my contract is up in 2 years, who knows what exciting phones will be waiting for me? There's only been 2 iPhone models in less than 2 years. But, Apple will be in the cell phone business for decades. I think it's a little early to predict the future.

Yes, namely Verizon sinking money into subsidies and advertising to promote a bevy of iPhone clones/killers, from the Samsung Instinct to the Blackberry Storm. Would they be willing to accept the iPhone with largely the same conditions as the original proposal, including no co-branding and no feature locking? I highly doubt it. Simultaneously, would AT&T let Apple walk, considering the major boost the iPhone has brought them? You can bet AT&T would dig deep into the money vault to retain iPhone exclusivity.

Verizon could cripple the iPhone through extra charges. For example, tiered data plans, with an unlimited data plan costing more than the current $30/month on the grounds that iPhone users have been demonstrated to use drastically larger volumes of data than other smartphone users. I could also see Verizon doing their best to extort a percentage of Apple's revenues from iTunes downloads, or alternatively simply applying a charge to the customer's bill independent of iTunes store pricing.

No, I don't. I'm sure they would like to have it, but they would be more interested in wringing every last cent of revenue than in offering better plans than AT&T. Not to mention that the Blackberry is a MAJOR source of revenue for them: the iPhone would eat into Blackberry sales, and like I mentioned before, they've subsidized iPhone clones/killers. They're committed to offering iPhone alternatives rather than the iPhone itself.

But, after all the money is spent on a T-Mobile marketing campaign... "iPhone, now on T-Mobile!" Would it be worth it?

They already spend millions of dollars on advertising. Dwyane Wade, Charles Barkley--ring a bell? Ongoing series of commercials? Recent one involved Yao Ming punking them? They're already committed to advertising, they would simply have to drop an iPhone into Barkley's hands and hope he doesn't gamble it away between takes.

Their goal is not total cell phone domination. Their goal is 1% market share.

i just heard june, but really if i have to sign on for another 2 years with at&t im not gong to do it. and im really bored of having to unlock it all the time

I'm currently going to school over here in europe, hungary to be precise. Apple already has a deal with T-mobile atleast here in this country.
