New iPad. Nice, but ...

Yeah lighter would be nice, but it's such a high quality product. They could probably reduce the weight a little by making the case plastic, but then it would feel cheap. Coming from an iPad 1 it feels about the same with the smart cover on and a little lighter without.
 
yeah, it deff. feels a little heavier than the iPad2.

It's not bad though. I complained about the weight of the first one but after using it for a week, I didn't even notice it anymore.
 
That will end up being a selling feature on the 4th gen iPad. Watch - I said it here first. :)
 
The iPad 3 actually feels more 'dense' to me in the hand than the first, if that makes any sense.

It makes sense because it IS more dense...a larger portion of the overall weight is a solid battery :)
 
It's more comfortable to hold onto than the iPad 1. I actually ended up buying a case for my orriginal iPad almost right away because I didn't find it comfortable to hold onto. The new iPad is comfortable to hold onto.

I'm planning to stick with the Smart Cover for now, especially since I bought the dock as well (which doesn't work with any case). I love having the dock on my table to drop my iPad into though and I'm going to keep things as slim as possible this time around. Lesson learned on the Otterbox defender... that thing was huge and heavy compared to this, so to me, this thing is light. :)

I think it's considerably less comfortable to hold than the first one. The sharp edges make it very uncomfortable to type on. I kind of wish it was thicker too.
 
Why should I buy the iPad 3 over the iPad 2? I mostly use my iPad 1 for reading content fromt the web, reading magazines, and watching the occasional movie. I don't see any use out of a super-high resolution screen.

Its not that reading on the iPad 1/2 is difficult, but the iPad 3rd gen makes the experience that much better. It's not a necessity, but neither is an iPad.

No, I've been using a Lenovo Thinkpad at 3lb to browse the web. The difference is that it required no effort to hold the screen at the right angle.

It's probably just a short adjustment period to learn how the tablet works in ways that a laptop doesn't.
 
Since I had both a smart cover and a plastic rear shell on my iPad 2, the iPad 3 feels lighter out of the box. I have no complaints.
 
its been a week and now my right forearm is noticable more built than my left, this is embarassing on every level

Seeing is believing. I've been using the iPad since April 2010 and the new version blows away the previous one for reading.

This is the main thing I don't like about the new iPad. My 1st gen was always cool to the touch. This one gets hot quite fast.
 
I keep hearing it's getting hot but I've been using mine literally all day and all it gets is warm to the touch.
 
Hot is relative. Its not really hot, just in comparison to the previous iPads.
 
On the subject of heat, it seems like only the bottom left side of the ipad gets hot (button at the bottom). The heat is a bit uncomfortable, but you can hold it upside down (button at the top) or if you're a lefty you should be fine. Once I get a skin/case/smart cover on it, it should be less noticeable.

Edit: Looking at the iFixit.com tear down the PCB/cpu/chips are on the left causing the heat.

I like the screen, the heat and speakers are a bit of a let down. I think I'll return it and just wait on the new airs.
 
Considering the dual core CPU and quad core GPU are powering a resolution of 2048 x 1536 , you can expect it to heat up some. Not nearly as bad as a laptop burning your lap (among other things..) so a little heat is acceptable.
 
As someone who had an iPad 1 and upgraded I can say it was worth it. The screen wasn't such a huge selling point for me. It was more about the processor. The 3 is still lighter and nicer to hold than the 1 was. I mainly use it for web surfing and reading PDFs which load in half the time they used to.

It's nicer to use to RDP my home machine via VPN now since the screen has a much higher density. No I don't remote home at the max, that's just freaking insanely tiny, but 1280x1024 isn't bad.
 
I dont seem to be having any heat issues and im doing constant video streaming from my pc for a couple hours. Also the weight really? is so light. Im loving mine.
 
I have been using mine since release and have absolutely no heat issues.

Serious? READING is where the new one shines. Text is so friggin' crisp - MUCH easier on the eyes.
 
Upgraded from an iPad 1 and have been using mine nearly non-stop (reading ebooks and pdf's, display photos, streaming Netflix, reading comics, testing new games) and it has not gotten hot. Slightly warm (and warmer than the iPad 1 ever got) but nothing even close to being uncomfortable.

I don't have a case for it yet since the ones I'm looking at are backordered.

It's a HUGE upgrade from the iPad 1. Not worth it at all if you have a 2. This two-year leapfrogging upgrade principle is generally true of all Apple electronics.

I think I appreciate the upgraded screen most when I'm using the Kindle and Read-It-Later apps.

Certainly true. Even little things like the feel of the home button are significantly improved over the first-gen iPad. Lots of little things (and a few big things) that add up to something really tremendously big.

I could see telling an iPad 2 owner to pass on it, but for first-gen iPad owners, it's an absolute no-brainer.
 
I upgraded from an iPad 2, the screen is well worth it in my opinion. Besides, the price of admission after selling an iPad 2 is pretty reasonable.
 
The heat issue seems to be more pronounced on the LTE versions from what I've read.

That said, I have a Wifi model and did notice the bottom left corner getting annoyingly warm today while the screen was at full brightness in the middle of the day. Aside from that, I've used it for hours at 75% brightness or so with zero discomfort.
 
I just turned auto brightness and set the screen for full brightness. It's ungodly bright. No wonder people are having heating problems...this screen has 4x the pixels...that's a lot of wattage going to the display. Auto-brightness back on.

Nah, it's still a pretty big step up from the iPad2. I couldn't be happier upgrading. Because Apple products tent to hold their value, it's pretty cheap to upgrade :)

The iPad2's are still killer devices with a lot of performance but the iPad3 is superior in every way (with exception to the charging times and the extra heat it can put out)
