Im gonna upgrade very soon to a P4 setup.. I have around $500-600 to spend on cpu/mobo/ram/hsf... I was initially thinking about a 3.0C oc`ed to 3.5~3.6 but the are just so many things to consider about cpu/fsb/ram that my money might be going to waste

I will be doing alot of video editing and ofcourse gaming.. I`ll also be using it with a 9800PRO...

What brand/model/speed would you suggest for cpu/mobo/ram ??

HAHA nice. a 3.0c will almost cost that much alone. iIf you want serious video editing and gaming youll have to get much RAM, if you want to seriously OC, youll have to get much good ram. as for mobo I suggest IC7-G Max3

get a 2.4c and OC it to 3.2 ghz and call it a day.

I second the 2.4C notion but think the max3 might be overkill, I would closely consider the plain IC7 or IC7-G max2 depending on your needs/wants

If you buy the pentium retail, I would recommend it, then it will come with a fine HSF.

Memory, I usually buy Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, Samsung. And you probably want at least a gig.

What ram would you suggest I get, if i were to get a 2.4... Im looking for a gig of ram...

theres also only $15 difference between 2.4 and 2.8c , but i guess 2.4 overclocks better... but since i`d need to spend some money on a better hs/f to oc the 2.4.. i might as well go for the 2.8, no ?

Im really lost... I`d really appreciate some help... Nothing worse than having the cash but not bein able to order !! lol

wow i didnt know 2.8's were so cheap. go for one, theyre newer so theyll have newer steppings, so theyll OC a little better.

get you some of this ram:

To be honest.. i had my eyes on that ram =) .. isnt it the 2-2-2 special one ?

One question though... would there be any room left to OC with those cpu/mobo and ram timings?
also.. $40 to go from 2.8 to 3.0... so confused

well the point of that ram is it probabily pushes really far at those timings, but to get it any further you now have room to make the timings a little worse and gain even more mhz.

I'd stick with the 2.8c. people seem to do well with that one.

2.8C
Abit IS7/IC7 or Asus P4P/P4C or DFI Infinity/Lanparty with 'CMOS Reloaded', cuz I really like that feature.
1 GB PC3700+, CAS 2.5, just get a brand with a decent rep/reviews, they all vary alot with each chip.

Mobo: IS7 for $95.99, or P4P800 for $105. (P4P800 supports 2.85 volts DDR, might prove to be beneficial)

Ram: 1GB of Geil PC3500 for $203, or 1GB of Geil PC4000 for $269.50

CPU: 2.6C ($181)

Heatsink: Thermalright SP-94 ($48.99) with a nice low noise 92mm fan like a Panaflo or possibly something with a temp sensor that changes RPMs.

My reasoning? 2.8C's 14x multiplier is too high, with 250mhz fsb as a goal, you really can't be sure that your 2.8 will run at 3500mhz, and you will really benefit with a higher FSB. With either the PC4000 at 1:1 or PC3500 at 5:4 you should be fine between 250mhz and 266mhz for your FSB, which equates to cpu speed between 3250 and 3458mhz. I've never had a problem with Geil ram, and it's very competitively priced. If you are looking for Mushkin Black Level 2, you are going to pay dearly for it, and will make you beyond your budget. The PC3500 vs. the PC4000 might allow you a little more headroom for a possible higher FSB if the chip can take it.

Asus P4P800+2.6C+Geil PC4000+ Heatsink and fan should be right around $600 to $625.
