I currently own a Gateway 4720-03. It has a MS-7399 motherboard. Looking up the specs, it has a lga 775 socket need for a core 2 quad upgrade from my current dual core. It also supports fsb speeds up to 1333. I was thinking of upgrading my pentium dual core to a q6600,q6700, or q8400. My worry is this. It says that the motherboard only supports 800mhz speed for the ram, which i assume is all dimms put together. Currently i have (2)two gigabyte ddr2 ram sticks for a total of 4 gigs running at 400mhz each. With a new fsb, the 2 sticks should run at 533. However the site states it can only go up to 800 in memory speed despite supporting up to a 1333 fsb. I was wondering if the ratio would be changed and there would be a bottleneck. Perhaps I would end up with a q6600 with a 1066fsb but only 800mhz ram? I also think that the board does support dual channel mode but is only running on single channel mode. What can I expect if I upgrade to a quad and should I get new ram? Thanks!
 
buy a cheap q6600 quad. Your ram will be fine, it just won't run at a 1:1 ratio like some people want to have. No biggie though. Other than that I would say your system is pretty end of the road but if you just need something basic a q6600 will be a very nice upgrade over a pentium dual core
 
Would a gateway bios which is locked automatically lower the speed of the ram by changing the ratio on its own? Also, despite having slower ram i definitely would benefit from having the 1066 or 1333 fsb?
 
Im no expert on the subject and I can't say for sure but as long as your board supports a q6600 you should have no problems with ram speed and also i am sure you would overall notice a little boost inspeed from going to a faster FSB but I am sure the q6600 is where all the gain in speed can be attributed to.

I say go for it! Don't was your money on the q6700 as you probably can't overclock anyways and as for a q8400 i think I remember reading its slower than the q6600 at stock.
 
The only way that I have been able to overclock has been nvidias ntune. I made my dual core pentium from 2.5 to 2.8. The fsb went from 800 to about 900. I think i will go for the q6600. Its just that they have the Q8300 2.5 with a 1333 fsb and I was wondering if that would be worth it as it is like 30 bucks more some places.
 
I would say no its not worth the extra $30. The q6600 is a better processor anyways. The only thing good about the q8xxx series is that they are 45nm and use a little less power. But you arnt going to notice a difference and a q6600 is a better purchase in my opinion. Might want to wait for some other members advice but they will probably agree.

edit: after doing some quick research. The q6600 has a lot more cache then the q8xxx series chips which should give it the edge in most cases.

1. Can the motherboard support a 45nm cpu?
2. What PSU do you have?
 
There's no problem with the RAM. You can run it at 1:1 if you want to but why would you? That would mean you're actually UNDER clocking your ram. Also, if you have DDR2-800 than you have DDR2-800, regardless of how many sticks are in there.

Another thing, the memory speeds you are listing are the DDR speeds. The base speed for DDR2 800 is actually 400MHz. 533 is actually 266, etc etc.
 
At the site http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/DX/DX4720/DX4720sp2.shtml it lists under ram ddr2 667/800 mhz SDRAM. Could i then in someway get ram running at 533mhz because i was told that it could only go up to a total speed of 800mhz because of the board or the ram itself. So by no problem do you mean continue to run at 800 total or buy new ram to reach 533 in each stick?
 
You don't need to buy 533. DDR2 800 is rated for 800MHz so it can run at 533 just fine. You're just not suppose to go over 800MHz, but going lower isn't an issue other than you're missing out on some performance.
 
So if i end up going with a q6600 on my board there would be no limitations on it whatsoever? The guy at the computer store said that there was a possibility that the new cpu could be completely rejected. Or another possibility would be the bios would force an underclock.He said the q6600 cores could end up going from 2.4 to 2. The memory would stay at 400. The new 1066 fsb may not be completely supported and would be brought down.......But then he did say it was "likely" to work other than the ram speed.
 
There is the possibility that the Q6600 won't work but it won't be because of the ram, it'll be because of the board or the bios on the board.

The FSB on the Q6600 has a base clock of 266.6MHz, it's "quad pumped" so 266.6x4 and that's how you get the 1066FSB. Your DDR2 memory has a base clock of 400MHz. 400MHZ > 266MHz so your limiting factor is not going to be your memory. To put it in perspective, your memory can technically support a CPU with a FSB of 1600MHz without the need to underclock the CPU at all.
 
If this installation did fail, which is probably not going to happen, would it be a good backup plan to buy a cheap 45nm pentium e5800 so i can go from 2.5 to 3.2 and then possibly overclock like i did the e5200 a couple hundred mhz so I would have a 3.5ghz dual core.

So as long as you put your memory in as pairs you would get up to the full speed of the FSB. If you put the memory in mismatched or in an odd configuration it would drop the speed down to the speed of a memory in this case 800MHz. This isnt talking about overclocking and what changing the memory speeds does just running the processor at it normal clock speed with the normal memory.
 
If the installation fails, I'd say your best bet is to check out the traders forum here and buy a LGA775 board for it. That's what I'd do.

That's not how dual channel works. It has nothing to do with the clock speed of the memory. 800MHz memory in Dual Channel mode will still run at 800MHz in single channel. It also has nothing to do with the FSB. You do lose performance because the path from the memory controller to the memory is narrower, but the clock speeds, both on the FSB and memory itself is unchanged.

While my description is very simplified it is still corrected. Memory in a dual channel mode can feed data into the processor at a rate up to the FSB of the processor. If you are running in a single channel mode you will only get up to the maximum speed of the memory; which is generally rated below the FSB of the processor.
 
Yes, you get more performance, that's what I said. Your MHz does not change though. Not for the memory, not for the FSB, not for the processor. Same story with say, wireless devices, I have a 5GHz wireless N router rated for 300Mbps, it achieves 300Mbps by using two simultaneous channels. I have the option of limiting it to 1 channel which will reduce my throughput, but the frequency is still 5GHz.

In this case, where the OP is uncertain about the relationship between FSB and memory speeds, the description you provided only adds more confusion. Yes, it adds more performance and allows you to better saturate the FSB, but it does not half the frequency of the FSB.
 
I would not buy any cpu that wasn't listed as supported for you mobo model and bios revision. That being said, I was able recently to get a q9400 running on a 965 chipset, with a bios update. No bios update would have been needed for a q6600, but I like the power/heat reduction and slightly better speed.

I'd see if I couldn't find a deal on a q9400 and compare it to the q6600.

By the way, your CPU FSB is the actual bus speed x4, whereas your memory normally runs at actual bus x2, basically at half your cpu rated FSB. Especially with a gateway mobo, don't be surprised to see your memory running at 5xxMhz on a Q6600, or 667mhz on a q9400, unless you are overclocking the cpu.

See what deals are available on the Q6600 and Q9400, pick the cheapest or maybe pay a little, not much, more for q9400.
