New Intel Build...

Hi guys,

Well I'm finally making the switch and saying goodbye to AMD processors- probably for a good long time. My 9590 rig is being retired.

I'm wondering if you guys would make a few motherboard/CPU recommendations?

The new machine will be used for virtualization, development, software defined radio, gaming, and media creation/streaming.

Thread count will be important... great power stability on the logic board is important. I've already got a 1000w PSU, case, watercooling, and tons of storage.

So it's a couple of new video cards- and one big meaty Intel processor...

Thoughts?

If you do not mind used, there are server pulls retired 8 core xeon Sandy bridge E5-2670 CPU selling for around 75$ on ebay. 8 cores and 16 threads
Get a dual socket server 2011 motherboard 270$ NewEgg throw four, 4gb or 8gb sticks of ram on board and you have a nice workhorse.
I got the Asrock dual socket 2011 but I am using 8 x 2gb sticks of Samsung EEC ram That I bought used for 40$ on e-bay

You can also find used single x79 boards that will work with these CPUs too.
I also have an Asus X79 Sabertooth with four, 4gb Gskill sniper 1866 ram sticks and the xeon E5-2670 CPU

have you any budget ? when are you going to purchase the parts?... if rumors are correct we are soon to expect the arrival of Broadwell-E chips which are supposed to increase the core count of enthusiast i7 from 8 to 10, so that's where I would put my money in, 20 threads at a pretty well balanced 3.0 - 3.5ghz and can be overclocked, so together with a Sabertooth X99 you can have a great and versatile machine, also as every other i7 it can be overclocked so you are looking to also achieve an easy 4ghz, that's a massive improvement in IPC over your current rig and also you are more than doubling thread count.

price is rumored to be at the same 999$ as always for top of the line i7, so in my opinion it have the best balance money/performance/power usage if the rumors are correct. If not then put a budget so we can check for a similar Haswell-E Xeon Chip.

Budget for the proc is not really a concern.

AFAIK, the rumor price for the 10c/20t chip is $1500, the $1000 chip will have 8c/16t. For now, if money is not a concern then I guess the 5960X is the best he can get that offers a good balance between single/multi thread performance. If the OP want to go all out and just want moarrrr core, then there is the E5 2699 V3 with 18c/36t available.

If you go Xeon you could satisfy your work related needs very easily. Especially with something like the 14-core Xeon's:

Intel Xeon 14 Core E5 2683 V3 CPU LGA 2011 V3 X99 C612 | eBay

Theres a ton non-ES related CPU's on the market. The only issue is the low frequency will hurt gaming performance. Grab a decent C612 motherboard with a X16 slot, even as a PCIe 2.0 x8 slot it would still provide awesome gaming performance.

This sounds cool. Is this like packet radio, or something else... ?

Over the last 10 years in amateur radio, there's been a bit of a revolution as radios and computers have merged. Most software defined radios have no knobs, and are controlled directly by the computer.

Here's an example of one in operation:

Yup... looking very closely at the 5960X. The suggestion of a XEON is nice. But on the system I have, I'll only need a board, proc, and RAM. If I go XEON I think I'm going to be spending a lot more.

Looking at ASUS boards if anyone has any comment on those?
