New integrated versus old discrete

I always wondered how the new integrated gpu's such as Intel HD Graphics and Radeon 4200 compare to good old cards from years ago like Geforce Ti4200 / Radeon 9800 Pro etc.
The closest thing I found is Toms Hardware Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart, but that only shows the rough 'tiers' the cards belong to.

I want to know if somebody has done some real benchmarks like 3dmark01/03/quake3 with real framerate comparions? :confused:
 
Wouldn't this be tough to do ... since hardware that has Intel HD integrated or such runs new chips with new architectures that won't allow you to lets say compare a C2Duo with HD4500 to lets say an AGP based Gf4200 while still keeping the CPU the same. Sucks.. other than raw specs .. no way to do a fair comparison.
 
Well, you could use a Geforce-FX PCI-E card. I suspect even a FX5200 ultra will have a hard time keeping up with the integrated HD4200, but I'm not sure.
 
I've seen overclocked HD3200 and HD4200 integrated GPU's score very close to a GeForce 8600GT, which is pretty darn impressive.

That would put them ahead of everything in the GeForce 5 series, ahead of everything in the GeForce 6 series with the possible exception of an overclocked 6800 Ultra, ahead of everything up to the GeForce 7600GT in the GeForce 7 series, and ahead of everything up to the GeForce 8600GT in the GeForce 8 series.
 
That must have been a huge overclock then. According to Tomshardware the HD3200/4200 belong in the same 'tier' as the Geforce FX5900/6600. Also, I played Bioshock on a Geforce 8600GT and I doubt an integrated chip can do that. :eek:
 
Make sure you were looking at the integrated 3200 and 4200 with dedicated memory. The ones that share system RAM are significantly slower.

In a lot of cases, the integrated HD3200 can easily overclock from its stock speed of 500MHz, to around 1000MHz. Some of them have gone as high as 1500MHz.

It's a beastly little integrated GPU :D

AMD IGP's can play Source games well somthing intel IGP simply cannot. ive played many a game of TF2 or Left4dead1/2 on a laptop with a AMD 3300 IGP.
 
AMD's IGP 4200 is a little faster than the 9800pro. Its hard to compare numbers directly because of much faster CPUs now, but you can still look at 3dmarks06 scores keeping that in mind. Intel's IGP is useless. Not sure if there are any other IGP worth looking at.

Looking at the results of some 3dmarks06 scores the IGP4200 with sideport memory looks to be in the 9400GT, 8500GT, HD4350 groupings. Which will run many games at low resolutions and low settings, but definitely makes gaming less enjoyable.

This review has some nice 3dmarks06 scores.
