New i5-860S

I don't see this on Intel's site. I have an i7-860S and it too has an 82W TDP.
 
Well if he mean the i7-860S, that model has been out for a couple of months already. It's not new.
 
Wouldn't it be more cost-effective to undervolt (and underclock?) an i5 750 or i5 760?
 
a drop from 95 tdp to 82 tdp isnt enough for me to call it a SFF.. Now if it was 45w quad it would be another story.
 
I don't know if it's the same case as the i5 750s

i5 750s is 2.4Ghz where the non-S part is 2.66Ghz, seems the same here. Also turbo functionality is reduced. Turbo won't work with 4 cores active on the 750s, max 3 active cores while the regular 750 will do +1 pretty much all the time if temps are in check.

Not worth it imho, if you aren't going for all out performance but want the 4 cores...maybe for the future or something you can get a regular 750 and underclock and undervolt it.

That's neat. AMD hasn't had too much in the low power segment that I have seen, so that's cool.

That, and clock for clock the new Intel architecture is still more efficient than AMD's offerings, but still the price point is really good on those chips. If nothing else, it means quad core mini ITX machines will probably start becoming a lot more common.
 
It's not that good, most likely they aren't even binned to be more efficient, exact same silicon sold differently, with a lower clock the normal ones are better bang for the buck

Yeah that's what I don't get. The S CPUs from Intel always seem like a huge rip to me. A few watts less than the non-S version but then they run at a lower clockspeed, and the price is something nuts too. It looks like the 860S is a $70 premium on the 860, for what? 13W less TDP? 13W, how big a deal is that really? And what would a regular 860 underclocked to 860S speeds (and perhaps undervolted a little as well) save in TDP?

And it's not like these CPUs aren't both using C1E, Speedstep, etc., so it's not like it's always that much savings.

Maybe I'm wrong, but to me, the S seems like it stands for "Suckers", as in i7 860 Sucker edition.
 
Unless those who got them were able to get them at a very good price.
