yes, i've searched the past threads, but a great # of them aren't relevant to my situation.

i've always used a computer as my current router, but i've decided to get a router so i can shut off the computer when i don't need to use it.

dlink, netgear, linksys seems to dominate the market. stick w/one of them? get somn else? what do you recommend? price is 100-200ish.

in terms of application. i have a 5port gigabit switch connecting 2 PCs. very simple internet sharing, perhaps firewall but that's it. also needs to be wired. i don't plan to have the current 802.11 wifi spec.

I would go with some variation of the wrt54g, just watch out for the v5's though. With linux firmware you can do a bunch more with them than you could with any other home router.

For what you are stating as your requirements, you don't need to spend 100-200 bucks. Any of the base model home routers should be fine. 1 question - do you use bittorrent heavily? There are complaints that the multiple simultaneous connections cause problems on low end equipment.

yesh. will BT&Newsgroup heavily from both clients =). any other recommendations?

QFT

I got a linksys WRT54 it's a v4 if I run more than 2 torrents or more than a couple downloads on edonkey it chokes horribly, it freakin sucks. I bought it to replace a dlink 604 that fried, but funnily enough it never once choked like this linksys.

i'm looking for advanced stuff, just somn that's going to always on but without the computer being always on.

If you don't want wireless, snag a Linksys BEFSX41...downgrade the firmware to 1.45.7...prepare for rock solid speed. That's my favorite non-wireless router for under 100 bucks.

yeoldestonecat,

@those prices, i'd rather get pix501 which is just another 100 or so.

but i'm talking about $100-200. i've been reading up on user reviews and the most common complaint i've been hearing about home-targeted router/fw is that it resets alot and it doesn't cope with BT&Newsgroup much. in that case, i should stick to what i have right?

From a quick browse of the monowall site I do not see on the features page anything about supporting wireless....can it do this for that wrap system you suggested? I find the hardware most intriguing.

Straight from the features page...

"# wireless support (access point with PRISM-II/2.5/3 cards, BSS/IBSS with other cards including Cisco)
# captive portal
"

So yes, it supports wireless. Just make sure you get a compatible card. The one I recommened is compatible.

Well if you're shooting that much higher into the price range where a little PIX501 would look good...then I'd kick it up another notch and get a Linksys/Cisco RV082. :D

The BEFSX41...best bang for the buck in my experience in the "under 100 dollar market". I've deployed a couple of hundred of them...literally. I don't see the "reboot issues" or whatever people talk about. I think a lot of them either have left the default firmware on, especially if somewhat newer with the 1.50xx firmware or 1.51xx versions of firmware, which I agree are horrible. Or..if they did their homework and learned that the 1.45.7 firmware is the best..they didn't flash them properly with hard resets first. Because those routers are very good. Faster than the SR versions.

However, the RV0 series...VERY VERY good. High availability, very fast, very feature rich. Especially the RV082 and RV016 models. The RV042 is 1/2 the CPU power (233 or 266..I forget, versus the 533 MHz in the 082 and 016 models)
