Howdy all,

Me, and my dad just built 2 of the exact same machines (specs in my sig). So we finally get both up and running, and start playing some Desert Combat. For some reason, I was noticing a good amount of lag, while he was getting ZERO. Then, I noticed his machine would FLY through installations, and loadings, while mine would lag on behind his.

So I decided to take the machines to the benchmarks. As far as I know, these scores are pretty bad for this type of a machine.

Here were the results.

My Machine:
3DMark03 v.350 :: 6,587
AquaMark3 :: 37,689
PCMark04 :: 2,133
3DMark05 :: 4,079

My Dads Machine:
3DMark03 v350 :: 5,987
AquaMark3 :: 50,509
PCMark04 :: 3,385
3DMark05 :: 3,856

I still need to run 2 benchmarks, and will run the 3dMark03 v 360 shortly. As far as I'm concerned, this is p[oor performance for this new system.

We're using the:
Xtreme G 66.76 VGA Drivers (would use the 71.80s, but they don't support the 2005FPW)
MSI 1.4 BIOS
Newest nForce Chipset

However, for the chipset, I installed the new version ontop of the older version, as I didn't know at the time driver cleaner cleans chipsets as well. Should I run driver cleaner on both the nForce Chipset, and the Video card drivers, and give them both a reinstall?

Nothing is overclocked, and everything is using stock speeds.

What do you think the problem could be?

I'll go run the last 2 benchmarks and report back with scores.

Thanks in advance guys.

Jnick

P.S. - We're both running in Cool 'n' Quiet mode.

Ram Timings = 2-2-2-5-1T

Probably messed up chipset driver installation. That's what usually causes radically reduced performance like that. Also, don't play with aftermarket hack drivers when you are trying to get a system up and running. Use the latest OEM drivers for everything, then play with that shit later.

we need to know every part that's in those computers.

*edit*

unless it's the ones in ur sig....

Goat,

Yes it IS the computer in my sig. The only difference between the 2 are Harddrives (not size, but manufacturer, and programs installed.)

I have:
120GB Western Digital - Master (BRAND New -- 2 Days old)
80GB Segate - Slave

He Has:
80GB Maxtor - Master
120GB Maxtor - Slave

CastelBravo - What should I use to uninstall the Chipset drivers?

I have ran the other two tests. Scores are posted on the originial post

Thanks a bunch guys.

Jnick

Definitley sounds like a chipset issue... I'm not sure how to uninstall, but I can safely say that reformatting will get rid of it ;)

I just used the chipset drivers that came on the CD with my Neo2 and everything seems to be hunky-dory.
I'd expect numbers more like this:
3DMark03 v.350 :: 12,000+
AquaMark3 :: 65,000+
PCMark04 :: 5,000+
3DMark05 :: 5,000+

Kueller,

I also noticed you're using BIOS 1.41 . . . do you mean the 1.4 BIOS that comes with your Mobo, or is it a hacked/modded 1.41 BIOS?

Are thoe scores I should be expecting on stock? Also, what graphics drivers are you using?

Anyone know how to uninstall the chipsets?

Thanks guys.

Jnick

It sounds like chipset drivers to me as well. My fix may well not be the safest way (I dunno if you're supposed to do updates from a boot floppy or something) but it's always worked for me:

- Go to mobo manufacturer's web site
- Download latest chipset drivers
- Run the program from Windows
- Sorted

It's a modded bios. I like it. 1.36 also seems to be popular.

As for the scores, those are more or less what you should expect stock, think of them as guidelines, not guarantees. I'm using 71.80's.

I'd say just go ahead and reformat, if these systems are brand new there can't be too much on them yet, right?

Nah, they're pretty much have everything needed in them.

Can't driver cleaner take out chipset drivers? It says it cleans nForce Drivers . . .

Jnick

Drivercleaner has chipsets listed, so I think that should do the trick.
A few years ago I had something really similar happen (damned VIA drivers...) and had to wipe the HD as a result, but Driver Cleaner should do the trick.

Thanks for the reply.

After I wipe out the current chipsets, which should I install?

The original on the CD? The Newest from MSI site, or the Newest from Nvidia's site?

Thanks guys.

Jnick

I'd use the drivers from the MSI site... and on another note, all of those benchmark scores seem WELL below what they should be. Get all your drivers up to date and you should be good.

As a reference point, my rig scores the following:

3DMark03: 13090
3DMark05: 5980
Aquamark3: 73,467

If it were my PC I would use driver cleaner to clean out all the mobo drivers AND the videocard drivers and then I would use the newest MSI drivers for the mobo and the newest Nvidia drivers for the videocard.

I would also make sure to run and rerun Windows Update until absolutely everything was installed and then add the .net framework as well.

Also is your RAM 2x512mb sticks of Dual channel RAM, or a single 1GB stick... It shouldn't have a HUGE affect if it's 1 stick, but it will drop you probably 200-300 points in 3dmark 05.

Make sure AA and AF are off.
Make sure you have the right FSB(I guess Hyper Transport) setting
Make sure there are no conflicts in your Device Manager
Check the voltages on your power supply

Here's an update guys.

I also thought it would be a chipset driver problem . . . but apparently, it isn't.

I uninstalled the chipset drivers through the control panel, then used driver cleaner for both nForce, and the Nvidia graphics drivers.

I installed Nvidias nForce 5.10 and the nVidia 66.93 drivers.

My Aquamark 3 score went up to 38,033 and my pcmark04 went up to 2,132.

Once again, no where near where I should be, so I did the same process. Took out the video card drivers, and chipset drivers, then reinstalled MSI chipset drivers, and Xtreme G video card drivers.

My score went up to:
Aquamark 3 - 39,520
PcMark - 2,295

Once again, it went up about 1,00 points, and 100 points for PCMark - but stil not where it should be.

So my guess is that the problem is elsewhere.

I have 2x512 running in dual channel. I also have ALL of the windows updates.

AND I'm running Service Pack 2 -- Could this be the issue?

The only yellow question mark in device manager is for the on board sound on my mobo, but I'm not using it, so I never installed the driver for it.

I don't know how to check my fsb/ht nor my PS voltages. If you can explain how, I'd be more than happy to.

Keep the suggestions coming, as I'm totally out of ideas.

Thanks a million.

Jnick

Edit:

Here's some BIOS settings I just looked up:

HT Frequency = 5x
CPU FSB Freq = 200
AGP Freq = 66
CPU Vid = 1.500V
AGP Voltage = 1.50V

Wait.... is that 5x the multiplier?

Download CPU-Z, take a screen shot of the main window of it, and post it on here.

Umm instead of just not installing drivers, how about disabling the sound in the BIOS?

First reset your bios to "optimal defaults" Then disable the things you are not using in "perifials" (or something like that, each BIOS is similar but somewhat different)

Thanks in advance guys.

Jnick

P.S. - We're both running in Cool 'n' Quiet mode.

Ram Timings = 2-2-2-5-1T

Problem Solved!!!

I took Cool 'n' Quiet Off.

AquaMark - 65,100
PCMark04 - 4,555

That seemed to be the culprit!

Now I'll just run The 3DMarks, and be set :).

Now I'm eager to know which chipset has the best performance. Right now I', using MSI Newest.. I'll check out how Nvidia's Performs in comparison. I'll make a thread showing the differences between both in the Mobo Section, when I'm done ;).

Thanks for all of the help guys and Take Care.

Jnick

Thanks dude, hehe.

I'll tke pics in CPU-Z anyway . . . I'll post em up a bit later.

Thanks everyone.

Jnick

i was wondering if i could get some answer.

I don't know what you guys keep talking about BENCHMARK, AQUAMARK, etc? What are those? and what does it do?

These programs put stress on your system, and give you a "score". It's like a physicial fitness test. This score basically rates your system. Depending on your score, and on the benchmark, depends on how "good" your system is.

I'm sure other peopl could clarify this better, but this is how I view it.
