New Headphones

I am needing to get some new headphones. A friend recommended Ultrasone PRO 550 ($150 on Amazon). But I wanted to see if you had any other suggestions.

Here's some info: I would say my ratio of game/music is 70/30. When I listen to music I usually listen to breakbeats/electro/little dub/other kinds of house/hiphop so I would like decent bass. At the moment I will just be plugging these in to my onboard sound. I was hoping to spend around $100-150. The new review on here makes me think about increasing my budget but I really don't want to do that. Do any of you have any suggestions in that price range?

Could look on HardOCP's front page at the Audio-Technica ATH-A900's. I'm currently rocking a set myself. If those are too much you can always pick up the 700's instead.

I personally prefer closed to open, but that's a personal choice, so I can't recommend which one "you'll like more". If you prefer open, Audio-Technica also makes those, distinguished by the "D" in the model number. IE: ATH-AD700.
 
Those will be a good fit for you if bass is important. The HFI 780s are also $151 on Amazon currently and will be extremely similar, albeit different pads and cord so you should look into those as well.

I have tried the 780s, but not the 550s but as I understand it the 550s should have a wider soundstage. The bass will be livelier and stronger on the 780s, however.

If you'd like to not stretch your budget quite to the maximum then consider the HFI 580s as a lot of people prefer them to the 780s and 550s even though they are a slightly lower end headphone.

Beyond all of the above the stanard DT 770/D2000 suggestions apply for heavy bass cans although slightly out of your price range I think.
 
I've only heard good things about Ultrasone PRO 550, I've been trying to decide between those and the ATH-AD700 although if you want bass you'd probably be better suited with a closed so A700's or Ultrasone PRO 550 would be better fit for you.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I do want closed headphones for a couple reasons, I live in small apartment with my wife so to cancel her noise out (not nagging, just tv/her music/cleaning/etc) and the bass. I guess it looks like I will go with the 550's since I really don't want to pay more then that, otherwise I would go for the ATH-A900's.

The ATH-M50s have a different purpose than the A700s. The M50 is designed as a studio reference headphone and has a very neutral response. The A700 by comparison has a warm and colored sound that is more fun for music and movies.

To be honest the M50s are just much more popular and for their price they are an incredible headphone. My personal preference is the A700s but I think the M50 is a better overall value for pure sound quality. The A900s on the other hand are what I'd recommend overall as they have clarity superior to both and a much more fun sound than the M50s.

What is your budget exaclty? There are a lot of great earphones, headphones out there. It all depends on your budget and desired price point.
 
I thought I read that the AT A#00 was bass light. That would not work with the type of music he listens to and probably not gaming as well. I suggest you save a few bucks and consider the Creative Aurvana Live. It is on sale for just $55 at the moment. Soundstage is decent for a closed headphone, has a fun sound that fits your type of music and is super comfortable. It uses the same Fostex drivers as the discontinued, but awesome Denon D1000 / D1001 headphones that used to go for $100-150. The only difference being the all plastic design vs the inclusion of metal in the sturdier Denon version.

I recommend Audio Technica ATH-M50's , great price , amazing performance and easy to power.

In that price range for closed headphones it doesn't get a lot better.
