I just received 2x WD black 2tb in the mail. I'm going to use them to replace one of my drives I have some programs installed on that run from it, plus some others. Can I just cut the files from this old drive to the new one, and give it the same letter and they will run the same?

The programs that are installed are mostly just games, and a few things I didn't want installed on my SSD so they wouldn't take up a ton of space. Suggestions/help please?

EDIT: Also, what's the best way to completely wipe drives and erase all data (other than formatting, unless that erases everything for sure?) to prepare for sale?

I'm fairly certain you'll run into issues (aka not working) if you simply cut/paste files across drives like that. Not sure though so somebody else can speak.

For your second question, use either Dban or a Linux live CD, and just write zeroes to the drive (Google should explain things if you just search "how to write zeroes to drive" or something).

WD has a free cloning tool available on their website. Just use that - much easier than trying to copy files.

A simple write of zeroes is enough of a secure wipe - heck, a simple format and de-partition is enough to prevent 99% of people from accessing the data.

ubcd will have the tools to clone your old drive to the new and wipe your old drive there after

i like HD clone but the free version on UBCD is F*CKING SLOW btw...so be patient or try on of the other cloning tools such as G4U

clonezilla is also an option

or of course something like norton ghost

oh yeah....WAIT a bit before wiping the old drive (to make sue the cloned drive is working right / cloning actually occurred properly)
