New HD: Rapter worth it?

Hola, I am upgrading comp, and I have a 40gb wd 7200 2mb cache right now, and I notice lag on desktop when multitasking, and such, so I think next upgrade will be new hd. I have another 60 gb in an externla enclosure (7200 2 mb cache yet again..) so space isnt really a concern, but are the Rapters worth it for the price?

I have heard nothing but praise of Rapters, aside from the 36gb versions being extremely loud. My budget is ~100 dollars, so a 76 gb version is probably out, but 36 is probably doable...


I have never run anything other than IDE, but have a a7n8x-x mobo so should support just about anything. How hard would they be to setup...?

I was told raid-0 was faster, but have never set it up, and for the price of the 36 rapter I could get two 7200 8mbs and raid-0 them...

Also, will normal round ide cables work (I am goign to order some when I order the hd) or will special cables be needed?

Sorry for lots of questions, but Im curious and found out i had 100 some bucks i could spend, and have been gettign annoyed with the delay on seek times/etc with the crappy hd I have no recently. thx:)
 
the raptor is worth it. yes your going to have to use the sata cable for it. and raid 0 is only faster with data transfers. raid-0 actually increases seek time which, to me, is what matters most, and is therefore slower in that department. i have a 36gb raptor and it doesnt seem that loud to me.
 
If you have a SATA Raid controller then Start with one WD Raptor 36Gig then When you can afford it add another and RAID 0 it.

Here's some benchies of mine in a RAID 0 configuration.

But bascilly you won't get any faster than SATA Raptor drive, unless your counting on SCSI which is uber expensive.
 
I remember reading that integrated raid controllers were finnick or something, do you have an ide card or mobo integrated?
 
Stay away from PCI SATA/ATA Raid controllers. Here are the SAME disk's running on a High point rocket raid 150. PCI-SATA-RAID controller.

Mine are silent for the most part, but nonetheless, they aren't worth it.
 
as i said, access time is where the speed is. look at how yours shot up because of raid 0. to prove my point high density drives rotating at 7200 have comparable transfer rates. the raptor is only 36gb.

11Ms is Si soft sandra's "Estimated Seek time", Which As everyone knows is Dubious.

My combined seek times are 8.7 ms from HDtach. Which Is no slouch by any means.

if you have a 7200 RPM Disk in a Raid 0 Array that Even come close to my raptors please post benhmarks. or even if you have a 7200 that's comes close to my combined seek times please post it. I have a seagate and we testest a mate's maxtor drive for seek/transfer times. My array still comes out on top. But we are talking benchmarks here.
here are to boot times with various Diffrent configurations, And Single Drive tests aswell. There was a clear 8 seconds diffrence from using a single drive to my raid array.

Boot Single Raptor (ICHR5) - 18 Seconds to desktop.
Boot Single Raptor (HPRR150) - 19 Seconds to desktop.
Boot Raid-0 16K (ICHR5) - 10 Seconds to desktop.
Boot Riad-0 16K (HPRR150) 15 Seconds to desktop.

Also while your disk is Jumping around accessing your disk. I Just keep mine Defragmented. And Clean. I'm not going to get into a argument about what's better Access times/Transfer rates. With a Raptor Raid 0 Array you essencially have the best of both with slightly reduced reliability.

As for the reliability.

If you have a 120 Gig Single Harddisk. and A Raid 0 Array. if your 120 GB Disk Dies you've lost Everything. If one of your Arrays Disk's Dies you've lost everything. The Diffrence is that you can switch to a single drive with the Array and reinstall and be back and running in just a few hours insead of having to buy a new harddisk.

Also you have to remember that Raptors are not SATA Drives they are Enterprise SATA Drives Designed for the low end server market. With inceased realiblilty and speeds.

Hmm, mine aren't even close to that....I'm going to guess around 45 seconds. I defrag daily, clean out cookies, system restore off, programs at startup kept to a near bare minimum etc.

Are you including your POST. I did not include that as when using the high point raid controller i have a extra two IDE detections to run though.

As for you speed remeber I'm running overclocked.
