New Hard Drive?

Is there any revolutionary or new type of hard drive coming out out anytime soon? Pretty much my whole system has been upgraded time after time except my HD. My current HD is about 5-6 years old and am looking into upgrading sometime soon. But if there is something new and good coming, than I'll probably wait. Would it be worth it to upgrade to one of those new Raptors now or wait?

Well the 150gb raptors came out like 6 months ago, so I think it will be awhile before they make anything better.. not sure what any of the other manufacturers are doing to compete against the speed of 10k rpm raptors. I know some are comparable but not sure which ones.

that perpendicular technology is new, there are some drives that use it. I am personally going to wait until those go down in price (probably won't be anytime soon :() and will buy several for a RAID setup.

but I haven't been following hard drive technology too closely so what do I know...

"hybrid" hard drives may be coming within the next 12 months, but I have no clue about when exactly and in what form factors. they are regular HDDs with some flash slapped onto them for faster booting/ random I/O.

Other than that, higher densities and bigger drives, as usual.

So I guess I'll be looking into one the Raptor drives probably the 74gig. Will there be a price drop anytime soon?

newegg had a rebate for it a little while ago, so if you are willing to take your chances with them, it may prop up again. It was $30 MIR.

Dell is selling the 160GB version for a 'good' price, but just a 1yr warranty. see hotheals.
