new hard drive not recognized

ok I know this is a bad post but bear with me...

my girlfriends grandmother has an old p2 system...ok. 200mb memory well, here

350mhz pII
200mb ddr
basic graphics not sure...

she wants a new hard drive because about 7 months ago(its actually how I met her) I wen to her house for a job... windows wouldn't boot correctly... I did a repair and it was fine but the way it was acting i was thinking the drive is failing. I told them if it happened again they would need a new drive, well it happened again. fast foward and they want a new hard drive. she has to have NEW because thats the way she is. (i was seriously considering getting a 20gig from the fs/t forum.) went to the egg and bought an 80gig IDE ATA100. the 40 was like 2 dollars cheaper so i went ahead with the 80gig drive. plugged it in, set it to master put in the windows cd(she wanted a clean install) booted up and the bios could not detect the drive and niether could windows setup...(win98SE) any suggestions? its a WD 80gb drive
 
Is it set as Cable Select or Master, and are there jumper settings for Single?

And I think it's ~200 MB of SDR, not DDR... :p

 
its definitly DDR... Ive worked with both. its set as single and there are no other drives on that cable. it is the primary IDE and I simply took the old 6gig out and replaced it with this one. My understanding is that it would detect the drive, just not all of it. I should still be able to intall windows on a partition.

If it is a Pentium II 350Mhz it no way in hell uses DDR. It probably uses PC100 ram or what is also known as SDR Ram. You should really check that out thoroughly.

If it is not being detected at all you should make sure about the jumpers. There are 2 settings that can be easily confused. SINGLE/Master and MASTER w/Slave Present. The former will not show up in the bios unless something else, that is set to slave, is on the same cable.

You might want to update the motherborad's BIOS in case. You might also want to realize that unless the cable you are using in an 80 conductor cable, the hard drive probably won't show up at all. The regular 40pin CDRom/Old school HDD cable will not work.
