New Hard Drive DOA?

I bought a new Western Digital Caviar 16mb cache, 250GB internal SATA hard drive. However, when I put it into my system and attemped to format, the formatting froze up at aoubt 86%. I have restarted, deleted the partition, and attempted to format the drive several times using Disk Management in Windows, however every time the formatting gets stuck somewhere between 73% and 86%. What could be causing this problem? Is it definitely a faulty hard drive? I'm running a fresh install of Windows XP Pro.

Thanks for any feedback / suggestions.
 
Why not run the WD Data lifeguard diagnostics and see what it spits out?
 
I ran data lifeguard and I'm getting a fail on the new disk. Does this mean its definitely dead and needs to be RMAed? Also, should I RMA it with Newegg or get it replaced by Western Digital? Which is faster?

yup, your drive is dying. RMA through WD. i had to do this with my raptor 150. they gave me the choice of either sending them my drive, or sending me one and then i send my bad one back. they will ask for a credit card for the later option, just in case you decide to keep your drive. you can also get them to get a shipping label if you decide to do that (saves a lot of time instead of waitin line).

Newegg. Prosecution rests. Do an advance RMA with WD if you have a credit card, you'll be back in action with a properly shipped drive within 72 hours.
