hey, i am new here and i am building a new machine. i want to do some gaming but i also want it to be good enough to do some video editing. i need to know what is the best bang-for-my-buck on building a machine. also, is liquid cooling the way to go ? i am going to be checking out the Cooling thread and reading up on some stuff. thanks for the help.

welcome to the boards. By saying you want to do gaming and video editing, you automatically enrolled yourself in a high bracket as far as cost. to better help you, tell us what your budget is.

as for watercooling, dont waste your money on it unless you have a specific reason for it, (ie. overclocking, bragging rights).

We need some more info. Budget?

I'll throw one out there:

Intel System:
Pentium 4 2.4C/2.6C
1 GB Mushkin 2-2-2 Special 2x512 PC-3500 if overclocking, otherwise 1 GB Crucial PC-3200
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB version
Abit IS-7/IC7-G if overclocking, otherwise an Intel D865PERL board

AMD System (non-64 bit):
AthlonXP Barton 2500+
1 GB Mushkin 2-2-2 Special 2x512 PC3200 if overclocking, otherwise 1 GB Crucial PC-3200
Abit NF7-S if you overclock, otherwise, there's a Gigabyte board that's really good
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB

Rest you can probably just get what you want (CD drives, HD, case).

No, you don't need liquid cooling unless:
1.) you're gonna overclock and want some really good cooling, OR
2.) you want a silent system, or
3.) Both

Not exactly cheap once you factor everything in.

well the water cooling i have a few questions about anyways. i want to eventually over clock so i don't *need* to start off with it. i leave my computer on most of the day so i want to know if water cooling would help cause my room likes to get damn hot.

i am going to say my budget is going to be around $2300 for the machine. i'm not too worried about my monitor right at this moment.

i want to be able to play games and run my adobe programs and .net applications there where it will run them good pretty much. it's for class work.

AMD 64bit is the way to go. Whenever someone mensions video editing, everyone jumps up and says "OOOO P4 P4!!!" but frankly, you need to tell us what program you are using. If the program is optimized for Intel chips, I'ma be up screaming "P4, son" also. If it is not, then I would go Athlon64 because it=pwnage in gaming.

welcome newbie brother. Saying you want a gaming machine automatically entitles you to a fast, shiny P4 or Athlon 64. Buy the best chip that fits in your budget. As for RAM, get 512MB, ot 1024 if budget allows. For mobo, well the other recommendations are good here. Video card, get a Radeon 9800 Pro with 128MB. Will support latest games. And of course, sound card. If you want more than on board sound, Creative cards are awesome (Audigy 2 the latest and greatest), but if you are on a really tight budget, Hercules cards offer great Bang for Buck.

Good luck on this project, and don't be afraid to ask for more help.

thanks for the input. what are some good places to shop. is pricewatch.com the best way to go to find the cheapest price? or is there one site that has a lot of cheap prices so i only have to pay one shipping price.

The systems posted look good and water-cooling and bang for the buck are inversely related.

As far as systems go, youve pretty much heard the best. Id PERSONALLY go with the Athlon 64 if I was doing some video editing and gaming.

If your not familiar with water cooling right now, Id recomend you dont do it at this time. Read up alot on it. Ask around the cooling forums when you find things out. Water cooling is nice, but on your first time It can be a pain.

Welcome to the forums.

heh. it's just this house i think man.i close the heat vents, sometimes leave the window cracked. i leave my computer on 24/7. but i stopped doing it cause i couldn't take waking up in the morning bein uncomfortable.

oh yea, thanks for all the help guys! i have decided to go with the Athlon64 over P4. read up on them, fits my needs.

the sites will probably keep me busy for a while that you guys posted. thanks a lot i'll keep you guys updated when i start building the machine.

I'm looking at building a new system too, the P3 system (see signature) is starting to show its age. I'd be on a budget of about $1000 Australian ($800 US), so perhaps Athlon or maybe P4 2.6, 256MB of RAM and a decent video card (GeForce 4 or Radeon 9800), new hard drive and PSU. A lot of decisions still to be made, but I have a case (with fans), burner , CD-ROM and Sound Card. Will also let [H] know of progress in the near future. Advice from more experienced [H] members would also be appreciated.
BTW I may overclock it slightly, but definately tweak it (RAM timings etc).
Thanx [H]
