New Graphics Needed. Question Inside.

Question: A few years ago i built a gaming computer. Recently, the 2 graphics cards on in my computer have failed. These Two are the 2 EVGA 6800 GT graphics Cards.

More Info: Ran the Computer-Graphics in SLI mode.
My BUDGET is at 250-300 US dollars.

NVIDIA or ATI?
So what would you guys suggest i get graphics card wise from Nvidia for single slot, or SLI slot cards?
Ive been looking into the 6000 series of the 6870 ati cards and was wondering if my rig would be ok with 1 6870. I plan on upgrading to windows 7 if i can, and getting some more memory probably 4 gigs.

What would you guys suggest i get as a replacement PER my Computer Specs?

CPU- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600. (Brisbane)
MEMORY- Corsair XMS series 6400 Dual Channel DDR2-800; Currently 2x1GB Installed
POWER SUPPLY- Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER 650 watt power supply.SLI compatible.
Windows- XP, thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 if i can.
Computer Fans - 4 Fans. 2 BIG fans 120, and 2 medium size fans 90.
SOUND Card- Creative XI-FI Platinum Sound Card.
HEATSINK- ZALMAN 9500 CNPS AM2
HARD DRIVE- Maxtor 512GB Sata/ Plextor cd-rw Drive 16x writable etc.

Most modern video cards will be bottlenecked pretty heavily by that CPU. I'd try and grab a used 8800/9800gt/250 and spend no more than $45.

There is NO point in buying DDR/DDR2 at this point in the game. Save your money for a full upgrade.

Athlon x2 4600? I think it would need an insane overclock to not bottleneck cards in that pricerange, mate
