I voted 4890, from all the information I've gathered it shows to be the best bang for your buck in the $200-$300 price range at that resolution.

If possible go with 2 4890's or 2 4870's. Or maybe even consider the 4850x2 which is a good card, I had it for some time but upgraded to a 4870x2.

I would suggest going with a 4850 crossfire setup. I've had my 4870x2 since october of last year and I play at the resolution your looking at. When it comes to DX9 games, I've never had a problem with games and 2 gpus. Almost all of my experience though is with XP with me just in the last month running a dual boot for Vista x64. So far I havn't experienced any additional problems, except for a code 43 but I got that fixed. I mainly play games with 8xAA/16xAF and everything else turned up in the games I play without problems keeping playable frame rates. My games include: COD4, COD WaW, GTA IV, Burnout Paradise, and BF2. Except for when WaW first came out, I've been able to play all games at previous mentioned settings without problems.

Aside from a single gpu solution of 4890/gtx 275 that you've listed, 4850 crossfire will be the most powerful setup. A gtx 285 will be the best single gpu solution provided you can swing about 20-30 bucks since the cards are so close to your $300 limit.

edit: I should clarify that when I'm comparing my 4870x2 to 4850 crossfire, I'm referencing to ATI's support for 2 gpus and scaling well.

Right, but 4850 CF < 4890/gtx 275?

I would hope so, hence my recommendation. The 4890 might squeak it out in some games that are not quite as optimized, but those seem to be few and far between.

hello the best one is the 4890 from what i read on these reviews. i thinking on buying a 4890x2 when it is out, for myself, my mobo is crossfire only.

well your system only has 12gigs of ram and a 1050watt psu so dont you think you should upgrade those first?

some people just don't know how to plan for the future... =)

My first choice going into this upgrade was getting the 4890 or the GTX275.
After looking a bit at performance numbers, I started considering XFire as an option.
The thing is that if I get a 4850 Xfire setup it's the farthest I can take it, where if I get a 4890 I can drop in another one in 6 months or so to keep the system viable (if anything that pushes that hard comes out).
In the end I tend to agree with the majority here - HD4890 is the right choice for me today.

I would get a 4890 myself. I like the performance per cost of the 4850X2 but 230 for an XFX 4890 (or under200 for other brands) just is the better deal IMO. hell I am really tempted to get a pair of them now, two cards the same power as my GTX280 for about the same price as I paid for mine.

Two 4890 should tear your GTX280 a new one....
Though i doubt you really need more than a GTX280 for fun eye candy game play.

Just for comparison here... I was running 8800 GTX Tri-SLI and Stormrise kicked my system's ass. To be fair, I don't know if there was a SLI profile for the game yet, but I was running the latest beta drivers at the time and tried forcing several different SLI modes. It was completely unplayable with max settings at anything above 1280x800 or so.

4890 CrossfireX, I can run maxed out at 1920x1200 and it /never/ drops below the game's 60FPS cap. Night and day. With CrossfireX disabled (single GPU) it hovers in the mid 30s.

All of this is with both cards OCed to 900Mhz core 1000Mhz mem on stock voltage.

I'm itching for a new toy, haven't quit talked myself into it yet though

Looking at your system specs you have some new toys in there already...
But if you're in the money an with spare time on your hands...PULL THE TRIGGER.

Hold the bus there. I don't know if I would drop the money to go from a gtx 280 to a 4890, if that is what I'm seeing. If your wanting to upgrade, I would wait around until the DX11 cards come out end of this year.

no, I would upgrade to TWO 4890s and crossfire. it would cost about what I paid for my GTX280 to start with. and I am not the least worried about DX11, if history is any guide it will be two generations before it becomes an issue. (Maybe one but as often as I upgrade)
