New GPU client - Open Beta

My next upgrade will be for the wife's computer, 6800gs out 3850 in and up the pointage!

I should still be able to run 1 SMP and the GPU! woooooooo :)

 
Take a look at CCC when the client is running and make sure the 3D clocks are getting set. What driver are you running and what is your CPU and chipset? Also, are you running other clients on the same machine? The one other 3850 AGP seems to be within 10% of the PCIe client, but he is running a overclocked dual core Athlon.

Hrmm, looking at your frame times, things are lower than expected. Maybe your board isn't clocking up or your CPU can't keep up.

I'm running 8.3.

I also need to know how to check the clocks... I opened CCC and it says 669 / 829, but not sure if it is properly ramping up from 2d clocks!
 
Yeah i tried that it is showing way lower than 669/829

less than half that I have to go download the newer version brb
 
cores are at 335/414 so way under ... woot that could provide some powa once I get the new version!

I am getting riva right now I prefer it for setting clocks! Um what happened to the test in RivaTuner? it used to allow you to test clocks for stability anyways... its 668/828 and I will report results shortly!

 
OK the problem is not the clocks... its the fact that the gpu is only being utilized 50% I never get over 50% gpu utilization... any suggestions?

What chipset are you on and do you have the latest AGP drivers installed? In CCC, in the overdrive panel, the clocks listed in "current clock settings" should be the clocks you are running at when folding. You should be seeing higher that 50% utilization as well? What drivers are you running?
 
What monitor are you using? From that monitor, the clocks look in the right ballpark. Even at 50% GPU utilization, your performance should be higher. I'm trying to track down a 3850 AGP to test with in my crappy old Dell box.

Would it matter that I have it hooked up through analog vs digital?

GPU usage has to jump up to 90% plus and points need to be over 1200 for me to what to run this. 722 PPD doesn't justify moving from a 1950 to the 3850 yet...

Hopefully these issues can be addressed.
 
What motherboard do you have? This performance isn't the expected behavior. GPU utilization my not be 90% with the current WUs, it also isn't on the PCIe boards, but we would expect PPD that is close...

Are you using the 8.3s from Sapphire, inf hacked from ATI, hotfix+inf hack from ATI?
 
I'm just trying to track down the exact case so we can try to reproduce on our end. ;-) And when I say "from ATI" I mean the 8.3 drivers from ATI that you have hacked the infs.
 
No i used the ATI 8.3 with the Hot fix. NO hacking done, just applied their hotfix.

Mobo is a ASUS P4P800-Deluxe
 
So that's a 865PE chipset. What bios are you running? What does Riva Tuner say about your AGP speed and write combining? What is your AGP Gart size in the bios set to? (128MB should be the default). I'm still tracking down a 3850 AGP and I'll see if I can dig up something with the same chipset, but that's pretty old, almost 4 years..

If you decrease the board core clock, do you get a drop in performance?
 
AGP 8x, Write combining on fast writes on. I'll have to check the bios and the gart size I thought I put it at 256mb.

Oh i know its old. I will try the core clock drop in just a few and try to get the bios etc.

BIOS is 1009
APG Aperature is 256mb

Anything else?

 
It's actually more that 4 years old. I think I found a Dell using an 865 chipset, now I just need to dig up a 3850 AGP.
 
Yes, but one of the internal labs might have one that I can get quicker. Worst case I'll just buy one, BTW that does seem to be the cheapest price after a quick search.
 
Well I bought this one about 3 years ago... I know its not the fastest. Hell a P4 vs a C2D the C2D is about 4x faster... so regardless can we get a GPU usage just like the cpu? that would be nice! :) To bad your not in chicago I could just lend you the machine! If it helps it has 2 Gig of memory might be DDR1 though. I'd have to look its been so long. It also is running a 74gig raptor on the sata port and a 500 gb sata as well.

If there is anything else you want me to do just let me know!

And Mhouston thanks for helping out and all I know ALOT of people have older machines like this that would love to slap a vid card in and fold :)

 
The 3850s are pretty new so most of the testing I did on AGP was with 2600s which perform okay, but they are a much lower end part. I'd love to see 3850 AGPs performing well since that can breath life into lower end machines. A pretty good CPU will likely still be needed, but your CPU should be performing better than it is. Can you PM me your email so I can send you a few tests offline to test data transfer performance?

Awesome! A new GPU client is exactly what I have been waiting for. I downloaded the client and and running it on my 3870, but I seem to be having some of the same issues as Sunin. My GPU is working at about 47%. Once in a while it spikes to 50 - 60% for a split second.

I have a 3600+ Athlon X2 @ 2.4GHz, 4GB of RAM, on Vista 64 on this machine. I have verified that the GPU clocks are on 3D speeds. 777Mhz according to Rivatuner. Temps seem fairly cool though - bout 50°C. Then again its not at 100% utilization either.:)

Is my CPU just limiting my card that much? I realize that most of you wont know the answer to this now but maybe if someone else is running this with a Athlon X2 they could share their results. Thanks!

That's still in the works. Maybe by sometime this summer or later in the year.

Wow, those are mad numbers. A sub $100 video card like a HD2900XT that can accomplish anywhere near that level of production would be a great bang for the buck

I am? Checking my stats... OK, I see what you mean. Well, at least this new client will speed things up quite a bit for you from the looks of it. I'm getting more and more people catching up to me as well...
 
Has anyone got any power draw numbers for folding on these cards.
I would like to see the PpD per Watt figures, so I can see how well it works vs the SMP client.
My SMP farm is running around the 22 PpDpW mark.

I'll see if I remember to get a Kill-A-Watt tomorrow after work. I'd like to know how much power I'm using anyway. I do know that running the GPU2 client and one SMP client I'm getting slightly better PpD then two (windows) SMP clients with AC.

 
My 3850 p4 system is pulling 207-216 Watts. That is without the CPU client running. I checked the cpu client and it did not make a bit of difference in the watts.

After looking at the results at the Folding Forum, it looks like nobody can get good GPU utilization without beefy CPUs (100% is achieved with a Q6600 core at 3.8 GHz). What exactly is the CPU doing with this GPU client that makes it so vital? When we're CPU limited in games, we just increase the visual quality until we're GPU limited, all but eliminating the CPU from the equation. There has to be a way to use the GPU to its fullest, or at least more, without a good CPU.

And can we set it up to allow both the CPU and the HT to feed the GPU? If that allows me 100% utilization I think that would make me happy. I mean 1200-1500 PPD out of a P4 machine would make it alot more attractive.
