I am try to get a good strong gaming rig for around 2,500 excluding a 160-250GB Hard Drive and maybe 512k more mem. Think this is up to current and future gaming requrements for at least a year or two before the next needed upgrade?
 
Oh dear. Where to start...?

If I don't say anything about something, assume I think it's OK.

Case: Drop the Xaser. Get an Antec PLUS1080. Comes with a TruePower 480W, which is massive overkill for what you'll need.

HSF: No. Get a ThermalRight SP or SLK, or get a Zalman CNPS7000. Or a Swiftech. Or an Alpha (I think they put one out recently for Athlon64s).

Floppy: If this is Newegg, I think Sony's is cheaper. Just a heads up.

PSU: Covered by switching to a non-rice case.

Mobo & CPU: Not bad, but I like the MSI K8N Neo better. Your choice on the CPU, but I would save the money and get a 3200 (with 1MB cache).

RAM: Don't bother with a 1GB stick. Consider a pair of 512MB PC3500 sticks of a good brand if you want to take the overclocker's route. This makes it easier to migrate in the future to a dual-channel board.

Thermal compound: I like the new Ceramiqué stuff (with the Outraaageous Frrrench Accent, only not) better, but your call.

Speakers: I actually like the new GigaWorks speakers better, but they're also more expensive.
 
I agree with what stilleto said, thats pretty much the exact computer I have, same case, mobo, HSF.

Works great, really quiet also.

I have about 5 fans going the case and I can barly hear it running.
 
antec plus 1080 has the antec true 430 watt psu, not the 480, but it's a great one nonetheless. i agree with the above posters about the msi. i would probably go for that one too. Here is another option since you will be geting a 6800. i have this power supply and it's nice (500W) $56.00

just throwing a couple of other options out there for you to look at. you could go ither way. great case with great psu included, or seperate.
 
That power supply just reeks of sketch. Fortron's 550W PSU is very well priced if you want massive wattage. However, a True430 should be perfectly adequate.

As for chassis, if you want power supply-less, consider one of Chieftec's CX cases. Same chassis, really, with some remodelling.
 
The case is more a visual thing as I hope to have it cool enough inside the case for me to be able to give up airflow for looks.

and with the 3400+ I hear that when pushed in gaming it better than the 3000+ or 3200+.

I though that the Raptor would be best for the Boot drive, and that 270gb of space should be fine.

I still wonder if only 1GB of Ram is really enough. Ive got a couple of days to play around and find the best config.

Changes the HSF and PSU as well.

Of course it would be better, it's faster. I'm suggesting that perhaps you could try a bit of overclocking. On RAM, do you really need the UBER RAM? Consider some less insanely priced XMS 3500 or something like that instead. Or hell, look at this stuff. Rated for a 250MHz FSB, it should be able to handle some tight timings at lower speeds. And unless you can think of a damn good reason, 1GB should be plenty.

Get a better PSU, I just don't trust a $60 500W power supply.
 
Would a 480 PSU be enough. I know NVIDIA listed it as minimum for the 6800.
and I not qute at the point yet where I feel I sucessfully OC my PC, maybe as I learn more I will. For the RAM I dont need the best of the best, but anything that helps improve the performance of the PC as a whole and can keep me from needing to upgrade in a year is just fine.

i have nice steady rails with 2 opticals, 2hdd's, 1 amd xp2500m @ 2.53 ghz. i would get the fortron over what i have though - or an antec 480. works fine nontheless. absolutely no problems.

I should hope you would have steady rails with such a light load. My old Fortron 300W was perfectly capable of handling that.

Dude, your computer should last you at least two. I spent less than $1500 and I know my computer will last me a year.

possibly. I reviewed some fortrons too. nice psu (both the 300 and 350w) and continuous power was equal to that of most 400-420 watt units. but you also have to remember in your quotation i have (2) hdd's, and the mobile has a very high clock. the video card (9800 xt) is also clocked. you know that can stress rails. i'll leave it at that and move on from this thread to allow the original poster to have a thread to follow.
 
How is this for a powersupply? (Looks aside and just Power wise)


and do I really need a HSF? will the Stock HSF be fine?
 
Oh and with the EVGA deal going on, Im getting the GT now and the Ultra withing the 90 days if I feel I need it.
 
Also Figured that I can buy a 160GB-200GB HD in about 2 more months when I have the money for it. so Just getting the 1 74GB Raptor.
 
I really hope you change your mind about that ThermalTake case. I would also reccomend hitting up computer shows. I know I got my 9500pro from one for $65 less than listed on the egg at the time.

Betcha ten bucks the True430 will actually be able to handle a heavier load than that "520W" unit you were looking at. ;)

I say get the PLUS1080, WITH power supply; that's a damn good deal.

Newegg also carries a side panel for the PLUS case with a window in it, if you don't want to do it yourself.
