I am building a new gaming rig for myself and I am torn between getting a P4 LGA 775 3.2 ghz. processor with a pci express mobo and pci express ATI X600 vid card or an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 1 MB with a regular AGP slot and comparable $200 ATI video card? Is the PCI express worth it or should I go AMD then get a new mobo and vid card for it when pci express amd mobo's come out?

No, not at those levels of performance as it relates to video. Go the Amd platform as it relates to the choices you have provided. The other choice is too expensive and you will enjoy zero performance gain given your specific choices

PS: There is no reason to even consider Pci express for your purposes so an upgrade of the AMd choice is not an issue

On the other hand if you intend to upgrade to better video subystems then the AMD choice may still be better since it is rumored that nvidia will offer a dual 16x pci express mobo thus making a sli solution viable in the future (assuming a nvidia video subsystem in the cards)

what applications is pci express designed for?

PCi Express is bidirectional and affords considerabley more bandwidth as well as better power delivery however your choice of video card leads me to believe that high performance gaming is not your priority and even if it was and your choice of card was all wrong, Pci express will benifit no one but only the most fanical gamer (ala Sli and nvidia cards) and or someone who does 3 modeling or video editing and even not for another year if not two.

there is the issue of scaleabilty however again if your in the x600 range of performance than you wont need a card agp or otherwise for another 2 or 3 years. PCI express is not needed but it must be intrduced now so that it becomes mainstrem and is ready for 2 years from now.

It is ironic that there will be a ton of noobies buying oem with pci-e with no real benifit to them but a new marketing angle for computer manufacturers.

People like those who frequent this forum will, however benifit as the newbies will help work out the system stability kinks and when we are all truely ready , pci-E will be well extablished as will the next gen video cards that may scratch the service of what pci=e realy has to offer in the way of performance increases
