2 x X3210 quad core xeon
Supermicro X7DVL-E i5000V
4gb vanilla ecc ram

will be installing suse 64 and the smp client as soon as i get the gear on the 28'th

Was going to start building it last night after re-doing my other boxen.
But the Wine got to me and I almost did a Relic.
Luckly I hit the mobo shelf and not the mobo itself.

I'm retireing my dual 250's.
Not enough folding power for electicity used.

Should be a nice setup but keep them mem chips cool. FB dimms are not the best in the world but I haven't had any problems with mine.

So, with the SMP client in 64 bit Linux, will it spawn 8 processes to cover all 8 cores, or will you be running two SMP clients (4 cores occupied per client)?

I'm going 4x VM's running the Linux SMP client.
Another nice ~6k PpD box.

Ps. It will pull just over what my Opteron 250's pull out of the wall.

Is there an advantage to running them in different VMs?

Is there an advantage to running them in different VMs?

2x Windoze SMP = ~4,400 PpD.
2x Linux SMP = ~5,000 PpD.
4x VM's = ~6,000 PpD.

I treat my Xeon Quads as four dual CPU's and so lock each VM to its own set of CPU cores.
Less FSB cross talk that way.
So I'm gaining ~400 PpD per VM over Windoze.

I also see the same type of gain on my Q6600.

The only down side I've found is the the system clock in the VM's is never 100% correct, it always runs a little slow.
Exactly how slow depends on the load on the system before the VM's starts.
So on a pure folding box its only adds up to a few seconds per hour.
But on my main box it can be minutes per hour.

for that much of an an increase in vmware i may aswell go for that, iv ordered everything except the mobo as i cant afford one at the moment. any reccomendations for a dual socket 771 board with pci-e?

tigerbiten do you run vmware ontop of xp or are you using vmware esx? And also what mobo were you using with your opteron 250's?

Running the VM's on top of XP Pro.
VMWare Server is a free download without an expiry date.
Useing CentOS-5 as my Linux Distro running at Init-3.

I'm sure you can do the same thing with a pure Linux system but I'm a Linux newby so not sure how.

My Mobo with the 250's is the Tyan Thunder K8W (S2885). ~1,000 PpD.
My Mobo with the 285's is the Tyan Thunder K8WE (S2895). ~2,200 PpD.
Both systems pull around the same power (350-400 watts) as my Xeon system but do a lot less PpD.

I would rather do it all under linux if thats possible? my distro is freebsd or suse 64. Im looking into getting a used dual opteron setup can you reccomend me what to look out for?

Thats odd that 4 cores/wu is slower than 2 cores/wu, especially with the overhead of vmware....but then theres tons of things that dont make sense to me

Im not too linux savvy either, but theres got to be a way to set affinity so you could try 4 smp clients natively. Linux forums?
