Hi guys,

I just started folding, SMP on a Q6600@3.0Ghz. I see some of you are really into it and have built your own farms, I will only be donating my extra cycles and some electricity but every extra bit helps right? I'll do my best to keep my system up 24/7 for half a year, it'll be a good stability test for my mineral oil cooled rig.

My rig also has a 4870, but it seems folding with an ATI card is a waste currently.

I mentioned stability testing, that is because I plan to upgrade early next year to whatever is fast and efficient in the upcoming generation of new hardware (be it Intel, AMD, Nvidia) and I hope to use mineral cooling on that as well. I don't upgrade every generation, so I want to make sure a new system will last me at least 2 years, and I'd be pretty heartbroken if the oil fries such a system in 6 months. When I do upgrade, I'll probably get more than the 5k ppd HFM.NET currently predicts.

Here is my system:

Folding under the name nightbirdoc, team 33,

Nice to meet Ya'll

Well.....

I do think this is a first.

Welcome to the team! May your PPD be high and your WU flow.

Hi and welcome to the team, every bit helps!!

Sounds like an interesting rig you have there - any chance of some pics?

Welcome to the [H]orde! Don't think that your output is unappreciated, a year and a half ago, you would have been right at the top of what a single system is likely to produce. It's for the science, the points are just for bragging rights.

PS, we haven't found a cure for the addiction, except for moar D.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm not worried about ppd, I'm happy with contributing with what I have. I am pretty excited to see what the next generation will bring though, since I will be upgrading.

Other than those two pics, there's not much to show. I didn't take any while building it, though I can describe it.

The outer case as you can see is just a 5$ toughneck tub from walmart. The inside framework is built with some 2$ tubs I cut apart and pieced together with some nuts and screws (all transparent). In the second picture, the components are: on the bottom right is the power supply, right on top of that is the CPU heatsink, to the immediately left of the heatsink is the pump, and to the left of the pump is the video card and its heatsink.

The flow of oil is from the pump (nozzle against the video card) to the mcr320 radiator, and back down to flow directly over the CPU heatsink.

Welcome to the [H]orde! It's great to have you! My only issue with mineral oil is the damage it would to to the resale value of the rig, but fold on!

Welcome to the fold! (sorry, couldn't resist).

The people around here have taught me that every little bit helps, and no one is turned away, no matter how modest your rig - which is good because my folding machines are laughable. Your rig is interesting. I'd read about using mineral oil, but never had the balls to try it.

Thats awesome! I've always wanted to do a build like that but I don't have the balls to do it lol.

Welcome to the [H]orde and enjoy your stay!

Welcome!

I move to much to tackle the mineral oil rig but yours is pretty sweet. If I did that I probably wouldn't be able to resist going with some crazy subambient setup.

I do like the efficiency of it all.

Awesome rig, welcome to the [H]orde! It's good to have some AMD/ATI folders on our team, too, so good luck!

Cool setup. Welcome. (new here too)

I didn't honestly know that you were that new until you said that, considering your PPD is ungodly.

Well, we can all hope and strive to achieve what you have, but until then, fold on! :D

Welcome and good to .see another Q6600 folder.

BTW, dont do what I did. I found out yesterday that I had reset my bios to stock settings...2.4GHz :(

But it is all good now. :)

suddenly everyone wants to join after I joined?! someone please close the team. and you Nightbird, don’t you think about mowing me cuz it aint gonna happen

just kidding :D welcome to the team sir, if you forget about [H]ecklerKoc[H]and the crazy PPD group things will start to look more fun

my stat is still “new” (join date: 10-10-10) and I already mowed 7362 members and planning to fold my way up to the top 1000 in about 50 days with my old core 2 rig that only folds when I’m sleep and at work.

about the mineral idea, have a look at this...

quick question, everyone keeps talking about the bonus points, how can I find it

Welcome! I'm new too, just started about 30 minutes ago so we'll see what I can pump out. I am hoping to run this during the day while my machine is mostly idle and just seeding torrents but I'm sure I can get used to it running 24/7 after awhile.

If you want to put that 4870 to work in a productive manner, you might check out the boinc client and MilkyWay@Home. I get about 80-100k ppd in that project with my 4890. I also keep Collatz Conjecture on there in case the MW@H server runs out of work.

Check out this thread. It will help you out with setup and bonus points.

Bottom line is you need a passkey for bonus points with SMP.

Very nice idea there, always thought about that

welcome new guys!!

Seconding the welcome to the new guys... I think you will enjoy [H].

I deem anyone with the balls to submerge their rig in oil to be officially [H]ard!

Hi to the other new people :)

And  to the people getting SR-2s for folding. That's [H]ard.

Talking about rigs and balls and submersion in oil just doesn't seem like it's ok. I think I'll check out of this thread for a bit and wait for things to quiet down a bit.

At the moment I'm running everything stock, no special reason other than I don't have any compelling reason to OC anything at the moment. I'm up and running with FAH GPU Tracker V2 with the SMP client and two GPU3 clients for my GTX 480s. Is there any special config I need to run to get the most out of my current state of hardware? I did some reading and it seems that 4xx series can add some uncertainty to the mix for folding and max PPD.

Any enlightenment would be great.

One SR2 for folding is now just Awesome, having two dedicated SR2s for folding is [H]ard

and there's more than one too

That's frickin' sweet. Cheap yet effective and original. I salute you sir ;)
Welcome to the team!
