Heya, new folder here... I got bored of doing other DC work and finally switched over to folding@home. I've only got an athlonXP Palomino @ 1553MHz getting ~8 CPU-hours a day right now, but I'll be changing over my other systems when I get around to it so that number should increase to somewhere around 5 times that.

But any new folders are a help... right? :D

You got that right. Every new folder meas less time before Standford can make discoveries that will save lives. And we always love a new face here on the DC forums.

Welcome to the team!

Welcome to the [H]orde.

Fold on.

Luck........ :D

just curious as to why the computer only gets 8 cpu hours a day?

Well, it's my main rig and I need it off to sleep at night(It's got 8 fans in it), and from what was left I took off a few hours for when I'm using it to play games and such. It's just a guess though, it's probably more than 8 a day.

ah, I see...I guess sleeping is ok :p

However, just to make sure it's clear, you do not have to turn folding off for playing games and such. It is set to run at lowest priority so that you will never notice it's running. Anytime another program needs cpu cycles, the folding program allows them to take as many as they need.

cheers, and again, welcome. We always like to see fresh meat...errr, I mean new folders...

Yep, I know, but games tend to suck up 100% of the CPU so it doesn't get any cycles then. It's running constantly from startup to shutdown as a service and I'm setting up EMIII to monitor the other computers in the house when I put it on them... I'm one of those people who always bothers to read the FAQ's, follow instructions and read installation guides/help documents to familiarise myself with new software so I don't have to waste other's time posting questions that've already been answered hundreds of times.

So, since I'm a n00b who read FAQ's first... who thinks the apocalypse is upon us? :p

Not me.
But you can hug our Moose if you want to feel better.

Ps. I had to add that line. :p

Luck......... :D

 Welcome to the [H]orde

and btw, do your games really take up 100% CPU? That's odd, b/c I've never seen/heard of that before...

Really? hmm, I've barely ever seen a game that didn't take up 100% of my CPU... Maybe that's just the weak point in my system for games (geforce 3 64mb/AthlonXP ~1900). It's due for an upgrade soon, but I'm hanging out for an Athlon64 once I can't bear using my current CPU any longer.

Wow, hmm... Try running a game w/ FAH running and see how your CPU % is distributed. This is interesting.

I have an A64 system, good choice to wait for :)

WHAT?!?!?

Damn....I'd better prepare for Ragnorok.
I'm positive that noob's reading the FAQ is a sign of the apocalypse.
If you guys need me...email me @ relic-hiding-in-the-bomb-shelter@crapped.my.pants.edu

dont trust this guy one bit reading and all not a good sign!!
also, whats this whole thing where u can sleep with it on!!
I remeber back 2 years ago i had like systems in a very small dorm type room where i lived/slept and after the first week it was hard to sleep with out the whirl of fans. Hell i even had one system under my bed without a case! ASK around I am not lieing!!
But hey it great having you join up and help the cause and any time any number is better then what we had before u joined.
unless you look at what relic is doing with his 25 cpu's in house and now showing like 50cpus lol

Believe it or not, actually, the problem isn't that I can't sleep with it on... I've fallen asleep many times and don't worry about it. But my parents (who are upstairs) and my sister (who is next door) both "complain about the noise" and that it's keeping them awake. Don't ask me how, but they complain every time I leave it on overnight. My sister gets annoyed and says she can't sleep if you have a light left on upstairs and somehow the light is going down our stairwell, to teh other end of the house to her room, under the thin gap under her door and keeping her awake... even if the moon provides more light than the light, she still complains.

Also, I just played a round or two of farcry - it got 100% CPU, F@H got nothing. Maybe my computer's weird? I've always gotten 100% in games...

nah I play EQ over 40 hours a week and it takes 100% cpu utl. but fah still seems to produce work even while playing far be it from its normal rate when its only running but still it is working. I also notice no real world difference with it running when i play or not running.
