So I've been thinking about this for a long time and with the addition of my new vid card I'm ready to play.

I followed the GPU install guide (ty btw, was very easy to follow) and got up and running last night but I did have a few questions.

HW Basics:
Q6600 @ ~2.7ghz (havn't pushed it much tbh)
4870x2 @ stock
8gb Mushkin
Vista 64

So I noticed that the GPU install was strictly GPU and no CPU action at all. In order to add my Q6600 into the mix do I need to install a second client or is there some config work I need to do on the one I already have to make it work?

This PC does not run 24x7 but I would like it to contribute whenever it's on. From the looks of the FAQ I should set the check-in times to 3-10 minutes to avoid losing any unsent data.

I'm planning to throw together a little 24x7 Linux folder with some of the spare parts I have laying around the house, should be fun :)

Anyhow, thanks for the great guides, sorry for the n00bish questions
 
Welcome to the [H]orde! I guess the first question we would need to have answered from you would be how much time you plan on having your computer on in a day. The GPU work units wont be a problem, but the SMP (the ones for the processor) work units take longer to compute. So, if you didn't have your computer on long enough over a period of days you might not meet the deadlines for the work unit.

Of course, I only turn my computer off to dust it out on occasion;)

 
First of all, welcome to the [H]orde, glad to have you aboard :)

You indeed need to install a SMP client to use the remaining cores since the GPU client will be used strictly for your GPU as you noticed. There are great guides available at http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Guide which is mostly my own work (check the About page and you will see my name on it).

If you don't run the PC 24/7, you are better off with no SMP client since this client have tight deadlines and require basically 24/7 running to meet the deadlines. Your best bet is to install 3 console clients (they can be run as a service so it will just run in the background).

I noticed you had about 5x times more membership time than I do (I think..., I'm "math" challenged :rolleyes: ), so you already know this is one dynamite forum. The good news is some of the members on the [H]ard team 33 are veteran folders and there ain't a correct, tried and true answer known to mankind about folding that they don't know ;) The best part about it is they (the old time folders) go outa' their way to help new or people that are ex folders and need advice on how to get "up to speed" :D
