Decided months ago to build a NAS with Christmas Newegg money and figured with all the time it'd be sitting idle, I'd just go ahead and build a 24/7 folding rig. Just started it up yesterday and finished my first WU. It's not much, but I didn't want to take that big a hit on the power bill, so I went cpu-only.

Gigabyte GA-B75N mini-ITX
Xeon 1230v2 4C/8T
CM Hyper 212 EVO
4GB 1600MHz
HD 5450 Video
Corsair 500W 80+ Bronze
BItfenix Prodigy w/2x120mm & 1x140mm
WD 750GB

Getting about 19-20k PPD right now in Windows at 100% CPU utilization. Any thoughts on running FAH in a Virtualbox VM instead? I hear there are big increases in PPD for virtual Linux over Windows.

What is your reasoning for not running native Linux on this box? Linux should be fine for a NAS box, and can be tweaked to do whatever you need it to do to make it play well with the rest of you network machines. I'd definately look at something like that before using a virtualized Linux install.

Welcome to the team!

agree with musky, why not run native linux?

welcome to the team :)

You could also use that 5450 on a few BOINC projects if you want to put it to full potential...

The more I thought about why I'm not running native Linux, the more I think it's a good idea to run native Linux. I'll dual boot Debian and see what kind of increase I get in PPD.

Also, re: using the 5450, that might be a good idea. I didn't consider using it since it's not remotely powerful, but I guess a few watts here and there for a worthy cause isn't such a big deal.

POEM (a protein research) should have GPU work sometime soon again. Otherwise, most of the GPU work is non-BIO for AMD cards in the BOINC universe.
Here is a list of the others capable of AMD GPU's:
Albert - test project for Einstein
Einstein - astrophysics
PrimeGrid - mathematics
Collatz - mathematics
Moo! - breaking encryption
Milkyway (needs dual precision cards only, so don't think yours will work) - astronomy
SETI - searching for aliens
SETI BETA - test project for SETI
BitcoinUtopia (hasn't had work in a while) - generate bitcoins to donate to worthy causes
DistrRTgen - creating rainbow tables to help break/test security

Welcome aboard.

I vote for Linux as well, if you are not 110% comfortable with linux, fire up Ubuntu and read through the fton of Ubuntu guides on the Internet :)

EDIT:

BTW. Nice build!

I wish my small PC builds looked as clean as that one.

EDIT EDIT:

You may want to turn the CPU heatsink to use the front to back airflow.

Pretty comfortable with Linux, messed around with a lot of distros and ran Debian on my laptop for a while. I had a Win 7 license sitting around, but I'm definitely going to test out performance in Debian on this box.

Unfortunately, regarding the CPU HSF, directing the cooler for the best airflow blocks the PCIe slot, which wouldn't be a problem if the Xeon had an IGP, but oh well, temps max out at 50*C under 100% CPU 24/7 with near silent operation.
