was looking at bulding a new file server what are some of you thought on what i have picked out any thing that you guys would change

Is this for a home server? If it's just a home fileserver just as extra storage this is massively overkill for processing power. You do not need multiple processors, especially that fast for a file server, a single p3 800 with 2gigs of ram once broke the internet transfer rate for terabytes in a 24 hour period.

You could easily drop down to a single processor board and upgrade harddrives to a larger size giving you better performance.

I'd also be curios what type of PS you'd be running.

^^^^ not the same record I mentioned but 417GB pushed in a day from a single 200 mhz should give you an idea of what a file server really needs.
 
well it would be a bit more then just a file server (ftp.mail.game.blah) what ever else i might wanna run
and i have 2x500 watt psu that i plan on useing along with a stacker case
 
ah ok, I'd also recommend a single drive to run outside of the array to boot your OS off of. Running the os off the raid array will put some additional stress on teh array.
 
Well, if you're looking for the best bang for the buck check this site out, they have 250gb hard drives for $50 each.

Yeah, i saw that but once a drive lasts more than a year there's a good chance you can get alot more out of it. Good luck with your project, i'm going to be setting up a file server of my own soon.
 
Unless you have a ton of money that you just like throwing around on this system, you are going extremely overboard with the server class motherboard and the opterons. A single Athlon X2 or a conroe chip on a motherboard with pci express will yield just as good of results for a lot less money. With PCIe raid controllers available including an 8 port Highpoint controller like the on eyou chose, you should go with that. You also don't need ECC ram. You can get 2gigs non ECC non registered for less than what you're paying for 1gig registered ECC.

If you decide to dump a bunch of money anyways and you chose a mobo with PCIX then drop the highpoint and get an LSI logic card. You could save a ton of money and put it towards storage if you drop down your processing hardware and motherboard though.
 
you have a link for some of that stuff, i was looking for a pcie card but could not find a nice 8 port one that was priced good. i'm not stuck on picx just one of the better ones i saw for a good price. i would like to get an x2 3800 and use that with some kinda of pcie raid card
 
from all the reviews at newegg all most ever is is sayings its slow
 
this will not be just a file server but it will hdd a lot of hdd's so it will be one of its main roles

I would change my post to include more information about my intended application. As far as I can tell, you have too much processor and too little memory.

That's a lot of individual drives... Why not get a few 500 gigers? Make sure you aren't getting anything refurb and stay away from Samsung for hard drives... I'd rather have Seagate or WD.

I saw that. Thing is, it's still not nearly enough information to provide any specific recommendation.

I'm sure people here will give him answers about the hardware. They're of no use to him, since those answers are unenlightened guesses based on assumptions about the application.
