OK everyone, here's the status on my new farm. I was going to built it in my room along with my other farm, desktop, and laptop. I few 80+ degree days in here (outside temp is about 55) put an end to that.

I'm going to end up putting it in our basement. The location is about 20 feet away from the circuit breaker box so I'll just run a new circuit or two. I am going to build a Wi-Fi bridge with a WAP54G since it would be a little unrealistic to run a cable down there. I tested the signal strength today and it's fine.

I have one more thing I'm curious about. I was wondering if anyone knows of any articles about using a single ATX PSU for several boards. I saw something similar where a guy used one of those huge experiemental DC PSUs with adjustable voltages to power two boards, but I want to go off of the standard ATX models.

They wouldn't have to power anything more than the board, i.e. no drives or anything. I'm not that familiar with electronics so I was wondering of someone could explain the feasibility of this idea. I'm going for minimum power consumption.

By the way, the nodes will probably be Epox Micro-ATX motherboards with 2.4GHz Celeron D's.

Thanks for any help!

I saw one where a guy took a standard ATX PSU, 2x 20-pin Extension Cables from Directron.com. From there he just cut off one connector, bared the wires on the other, and soldered them together. Basically, made a Y-Splitter for the ATX power connector.

Edit: lol, what I saw was that second page mage linked. :)

That's a good idea, can't believe I didn't think of it.

I would go through and use heatshrink and make it as clean as possible.

Maybe someone makes a prefab Y cable...

EDIT: NM, that first link has exactly that. Me = dumb (to coin a phrase :) ).

Man, if you read that second link, it speaks volumes about how good sparkle and enermax supplies are, also about shitty thermaltake supplies are.

I wonder what my 650W enermax could handle :)

$21.50 for that Y with shipping.

I tried this, but it did not work. While looking around the web (I really should have book marked this) a guy basically spliced in one of these, leaving the green wire out (I did not do this)

This is $11.00 shipped, add a few bucks for the splices.

Just a thought.

Very nice idea, just to be able to run 2-3 nodes pr. PSU is another way to cut costs on Farms :) - specially if you can get nodes that don't need videocard on bootup and can do directly network boot up.

For 21.50 per node for the splitters, you might as well just get 2 PSUs. here are molex connectors (male) for $1.25. If you don't mind some soldering, these could do the trick.

Oh, here for $.75.

Don't forget if he fabs his own he needs pins as well. Not a big price increase but still more to consider.

Trying to think of the site I ordered $55 in stuff to mod my PSU through... I keep drawing a blank but they had everything and it was CHEAP!

Turmelle had done this awhile back... I think he had a How-to in one of his Farm threads...

Here's the how-to that Lperry has on his site.

Keep on Folding!!

I think one could get some clean inline splices to crimp in, save the time/effort stripping the wires.

splices suck, they never hold , if you make your own, use solder and heatshrink tubing, you got lots of amps flowing thru those wires (potentialy and definitely at startup!)
