OK folks... you all BETTER appreciate this. I spent a total of 4.5 hours in traffic today picking these things up from Manassas, VA (I live in Annapolis, MD).
I picked up 5 Optiplex's with 1GHz Coppermines and 256MB RAM. I'm testing mage's fold-server and everything is going pretty well. I only have enough energy to get the server and one client running tonight. The only disappointment was that these machines don't boot from the LAN. I have to make a floppy in order to get them to boot off of the server. (Does anyone know how I can just copy the floppy image to the HD on each client?)
This is not going to be the final home of the Fa[H]rm, it's just easier to test in this location in my tiny room. Now on to the pics!
Wow, half a day spent driving just to pick these up. ALMOST isn't worth it.
Mmm. Ports.
The fold-server server requires two NICs, so I stopped by Best Buy today and picked up this Dlink NIC. It is the same one listed on Newegg that has the low-profile bracket. I was really going for a clean approach, and this helped. Plus, it's based on the Realtek 1839 or whatever chipset.
Hooked up and running. Note the 24-port switch. Expansion anyone?
Running FAH on the client, completely over the network. I'm pretty impressed with mage's work.
Yes, this is what I do on a Friday night. But at least I'm doing it, not just reading about it!
